Government to announce new English language and British citizenship requirements for migrants
picture hole

Migrants will have to live in the UK for a decade before they can apply for citizenship under plans to reduce reliance on foreign workers.

The change from five to 10 years will come with exceptions for people who make a “high contribution” to the economy or society, who will able to be fast-tracked for permanent settlement rights.

It comes on top of new English language requirements across every visa route, which will extend to adult dependents for the first time.

The measures will be announced by Sir Keir Starmer on Monday ahead of the Immigration White Paper, which will set out further reforms to bring net migration down.

It reached 903,000 in the year to June 2023 before falling to 728,000 in mid-2024. But that is still well above its pre-Brexit high of 329,000 in the year up to June 2015.

Several flights have been delayed at Stansted Airport after it was hit by an IT glitch.

The malfunction hit systems including check-in, baggage and security, the airport said.

Queues snaking around the outside of the main terminal building could be seen in footage filmed at the Essex airport this morning.

The airport’s website showed numerous flights were affected, with some passengers taking off four hours later than scheduled. Arrivals were not impacted.

Zelenskyy offers to meet Putin in Turkey – as Trump urges Ukraine to hold talks with Russia
picture hole

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has offered to meet Russia’s Vladimir Putin in person in Turkey on Thursday.

It comes after he said his team were “ready to meet” Russian representatives following Vladimir Putin suggestion of peace talks, subject to an unconditional ceasefire starting on Monday.
Russia’s president put forward the proposal for talks in Istanbul on Thursday after European leaders including Sir Keir Starmer threatened him with fresh sanctions if Russia failed to comply with an unconditional 30-day ceasefire starting on Monday.

In a post on X, Mr Zelenskyy wrote: “We await a full and lasting ceasefire, starting from tomorrow, to provide the necessary basis for diplomacy. There is no point in prolonging the killings. And I will be waiting for Putin in Türkiye on Thursday. Personally. I hope that this time the Russians will not look for excuses.

It comes after Mr Trump shared a post on his Truth Social platform on Sunday, in which he said he was “starting to doubt that Ukraine will make a deal with Putin”

Trump said planning to accept Boeing 747 as gift from Qatari royal family, may use it as Air Force One

US President Donald Trump plans to accept a Boeing 747 as a gift from the Qatari royal family, and will use it as a new Air Force One before having it donated to his planned presidential library, allowing him to use it once he is out of office, according to various reports.

It was previously reported that the jet was being considered as a new presidential plane, but not that it would be given as a gift.

According to the reports, the Gulf State ruling family will donate the plane to the US Air Force, at which time it will be retrofitted by a military contractor. The process could be completed by the year’s end, allowing Trump to then use it for his official duties.

Then, no later than January 1, 2029 — shortly before the end of Trump’s term — the plane is to be transferred to Trump’s presidential library, so that he can continue using it as a private citizen, according to ABC News, citing familiar sources.

Government lawyers have determined that the unprecedented gift does not constitute bribery, according to ABC News, because the plane will not be given to Trump himself, even though he will use it both during and after his presidency.

The US Constitution’s Emoluments Clause bars at least some office-holders from receiving presents “from any king, prince, or foreign state” without the consent of Congress.

Trump was accused by Democratic lawmakers in his first term of violating the provision and faced several lawsuits, but the Supreme Court threw out the pending cases after he left office.

The American leader is expected to travel to Qatar later this week, during a Mideast trip that will also include stops in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, but not Israel.

Hamas officially announces that it intends to release hostage soldier Edan Alexander, who holds American citizenship.

In a statement, Hamas says the decision to release Alexander comes after recent talks with US officials and “intensified efforts to achieve a ceasefire, open border crossings, and allow humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip.”

It does not say when Alexander will be released.

The terror group also says that it is prepared to enter intensified negotiations aimed at reaching a final agreement to end the war, establish a mutually “agreed prisoner exchange, and enable Gaza to be administered by an independent professional authority.”

Hamas uses the term “prisoner exchange” to refer to the release of hostages in exchange for Palestinian security prisoners.

In leaked remarks, PM said to tell defense committee that 10,500 Charedim will be drafted to IDF within 2 years

Statements that Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said during a closed-door discussion in the Knesset’s Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee on Sunday were leaked to the press.

“The law that the committee decides on is the law that will be,” he said. “Within two years, we’ll draft 10,500 Chareidi recruits. This is the number that the army can absorb.”

“We will also implement heavy personal sanctions against individuals and institutions. At the same time, we will ensure that whoever enters Chareidi – leaves Charedi.”

Netanyahu also denied recent reports of tensions between Israel and the Trump administration, saying: “I speak with Trump every few days – at least once every two weeks. They have their interests, but we are working together.
