The government has signalled that plans to bring a second runway at Gatwick into regular use will get the green light if environmental conditions are met. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said she was “minded to approve” the airport’s plans but the deadline for a decision had now been pushed back until the end of October. The Planning Inspectorate had made recommendations in those two areas after initially rejecting the scheme. |

Russia claims to have recaptured part of Kursk – as Kremlin reiterates ‘non-negotiable’ condition for peace talks |

Russia’s Units of the North had to cross rivers as part of the counteroffensive |
Russian forces have recaptured another settlement in its Kursk region, state news reported, citing Moscow’s foreign ministry. It said the village of Nikolsky was now back in Russian hands after Ukrainian troops were recently driven out. Sky News could not independently verify the report. Yesterday, Russia said its forces had also captured the settlements of Orlovka and Pogrebki in the Kursk region. Both are located northwest of Sudzha, the main town in the region which was swiftly captured by Ukraine during its surprise offensive into Russia last August. Security and defence analyst Michael Clarke says holding on to Sudzha is crucial to Ukraine keeping a foothold in the area, which in turn will give them a better bargaining position in potential peace talks with Moscow. |

Israel will not withdraw from the Philadelphi Corridor—a buffer zone along the Gaza-Egypt border—on the 42nd day of the hostage deal, despite the agreement brokered by Qatar and Egypt stipulating that the IDF would begin pulling out, an Israeli official said Thursday. The announcement came as the first phase of the agreement was completed, with the release of 33 hostages—including eight who were returned deceased. Fifty-nine hostages remain in Hamas captivity in Gaza after 510 days. On Thursday morning, Hamas spokesman Abdel Latif al-Qanua said the group was willing to extend the first phase of the deal or merge it with the second phase, “in accordance with our red lines.” He specified that these conditions included a full Israeli withdrawal, an end to the war and reconstruction efforts in Gaza. |

Teen broke into synagogue, stole thousands of shekel |

Scene of the break-in |
Jerusalem police on Wednesday evening arrested a 14-year-old boy suspected of breaking into a synagogue multiple times and stealing thousands of shekels of money from the charity box. The investigation began after the sexton of a synagogue in Jerusalem’s Ramot neighborhood filed a complaint with the police alleging that someone broke into the synagogue’s charity box safe and stole thousands of shekels donated by worshipers. The sexton said that one week after the first break-in, he identified the same suspect attempting to break open the charity box a second time, causing it damage. Police investigators began working to locate the suspect, and found it to be a teenage boy who the court had ordered placed in a closed institution, but who violated the court order and spent time outside the institution. |
