US military mistakenly shoots down one of its fighter jets |
A US fighter jet has been shot down after it was mistakenly hit by an American missile cruiser over the Red Sea. Both pilots in the aircraft ejected and were rescued – one of them had minor injuries. An investigation is under way after what the US military described as an “apparent case of friendly fire”. It is believed to be the most serious incident to threaten US troops in more than a year of America targeting Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen. US Central Command said the F/A-18 Hornet was shot down soon after it had flown off the deck of the USS Harry S Truman aircraft carrier. The two-seater plane was then struck by one of the carrier’s escort ships, USS Gettysburg. It was not immediately clear how the Gettysburg could mistake an F/A-18 for an enemy aircraft or missile, particularly as ships in a battle group are linked by both radar and radio communication. However, Central Command said warships and aircraft earlier shot down multiple Houthi drones and an anti-ship cruise missile launched by the rebels. The Houthis have targeted about 100 merchant vessels with missiles and drones in solidarity with Gaza since the Israel-Hamas war started in October 2023. The Hornet incident shows how dangerous the Red Sea corridor has become over the ongoing attacks on shipping by Houthis despite US and European allies patrolling the area. This weekend, US warplanes carried out airstrikes that shook the capital Sanaa, which the Houthis have held since 2014. Central Command described the strikes as targeting a “missile storage facility” and a “command-and-control facility” but did not elaborate. The downed fighter jet was thought to be a F/A-18 Super Hornet which is assigned to the Red Rippers of Strike Fighter Squadron 11 stationed at Naval Air Station Oceana, Virginia. |

Hamas has given signs of life for a few hostages, Israeli official says, as talks go on |
As working groups continued their efforts in Qatar to hammer out a hostage and ceasefire deal in the Gaza Strip, an Israeli official told The Times of Israel on Sunday that Hamas has provided signs of life for several captives. Israel knows the whereabouts of most of the hostages, the official said, declining to say whether the Palestinian terror group has provided a list of living hostages it is holding. The official added that Israel would not accept an end to the war as part of a deal, but instead would agree to something along the lines of a “prolonged ceasefire.” The Israeli negotiating team remained in Qatar on Sunday, where they have been for over a week, Hebrew media reported. Egypt’s Al-Ghad outlet reported on Sunday said that Israel has requested the inclusion of 11 men on the list of hostages to be released in the first phase of a potential deal, with Hamas apparently demanding further compensation in return for setting them free. According to the report, the first phase of the potential deal between Israel and Hamas will see 250 Palestinian security prisoners released from Israeli prisons in exchange for the children held in Gaza, the five female soldiers, and the older and sick captives. While not specifically mentioned by the report, it is assumed that the first round of releases will also include the female hostages who are not serving in the military, as well as elderly and sick captives. According to the report, Israel has requested the release of 34 hostages in the first phase, including 11 considered by Hamas to be soldiers. The terror group classifies all Israeli men of fighting age to be soldiers. However, Al-Ghad said Hamas has agreed for the 11 men to be included in the first phase in return for “special consideration” in the deal, implying that Palestinian prisoners who also do not fit the agreed-upon categories could be released.

Senior defense officials urge direct attack on Iran rather than on the houthis |
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned on Sunday that Israel would act against the Houthi rebels in Yemen with the same force it used against Iran’s other “terrorist arms,” appearing to indicate the start of a stepped-up campaign against the Islamic Republic’s proxy group, after a ballistic missile crashed into a Tel Aviv playground over the weekend. At the same time, Israeli reports said that senior defense officials, including the head of the Mossad spy agency, believe the correct move is to attack Iran directly, rather than go for its proxy group in Yemen. In a video statement issued after a meeting of his security cabinet in the northern Israel town of Safed, Netanyahu stressed that Israel was not alone in operating against the Houthis, pointing to repeated strikes carried out by American and British forces against Houthi targets over the past year. “The US, and also other countries, like us, see the Houthis as a threat, not only to world shipping, but also to world order.” “Just as we acted forcefully against the terrorist arms of Iran’s evil axis, so we will act against the Houthis…with force, determination and sophistication,” the premier said. Netanyahu’s comments came a day after a ballistic missile launched by the Iran-backed group exploded in a playground in south Tel Aviv on Saturday, wounding 16 and causing extensive damage after attempts to intercept it failed. |
