‘Mind-boggling’ Brexit rules hit British food exports by £3bn a year |
British businesses have blamed “mind-boggling” bureaucracy on a £3bn-a-year hit to food exports since Brexit. A new report by the Centre of Inclusive Trade Policy (CITP) has found that the shipping of UK food and agricultural products to the EU has fallen by more than 16% on average across the three years since Britain left the single market. This equates to a £2.82bn a year drop in produce travelling from Britain to the bloc. While the fall has coincided with the war in Ukraine and the COVID pandemic, the exports between the UK and EU “demonstrate no recent signs of regaining previous levels”, the report said. Industry experts blamed the decline on added layers of regulation required to send products to Europe since Brexit.
Before the referendum, there was frictionless trade between the EU and the UK. But at the end of the Brexit transition period in January 2021, the UK became regarded by the EU as a “third country” in trading terms, requiring physical border checks and health certificates on agri-food products travelling from Britain. |

NATO chief says Putin using Ukraine as ‘testing ground for experimental missiles’ and is ‘not interested in peace’ |
|
Russian President Vladimir Putin is using Ukraine as a “testing ground for experimental missiles” and is “not interested in peace”, NATO’s secretary general has warned. Mark Rutte made the remarks as foreign ministers from the alliance’s 32 members gathered in Brussels for a two-day meeting where there will be several discussions on Ukraine. In a letter to his NATO counterparts ahead of the meeting, Ukrainian foreign minister Andrii Sybiha said his country would not settle for anything less than NATO membership to guarantee its future security. It comes as incoming US President-elect Donald Trump is widely expected to pursue a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine when he takes office on 20 January. Mr Rutte, the former prime minister of the Netherlands, said in Belgium that Mr Putin was not interested in peace and was trying to take more Ukrainian territory because he “thinks he can break Ukraine’s resolve and ours, but he is wrong”. He also said: “Russia’s aggression shows no sign of abating – just the opposite – Putin is ramping up his rhetoric and reckless actions. “He is using Ukraine as a testing ground for experimental missiles and is deploying North Korean soldiers in this illegal war.” |

Judge orders Netanyahu aide Feldstein to house arrest after month in custody |
Eli Feldstein, a spokesman in the office of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is the main suspect in an investigation launched in late October 2024 of alleged illegal access and leaking of classified intelligence material. |
The Tel Aviv District Court on Tuesday ordered the release to house arrest of Eli Feldstein, an aide and spokesman for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, after a judge ruled that there was insufficient evidence to charge him with intending to harm national security. Feldstein was held in custody for more than a month on suspicion of leaking stolen classified intelligence information to the foreign press. He was held along with another suspect in the case, an IDF reservist who will also be released to house arrest. Feldstein, a spokesman who worked closely with Netanyahu over the last year, was charged last month with transferring classified information with the intent to harm state security, a charge that can carry a sentence of life in prison, as well as illicit possession of classified information and obstruction of justice. The case is centered around the alleged leak of a highly classified document to the German tabloid Bild in September, which ostensibly detailed Hamas’s priorities and tactics in hostage negotiations (though it later became apparent the document was written by lower-level officials in the terror group and did not necessarily reflect the leadership’s position). The document was allegedly unlawfully removed from the IDF’s military intelligence database by the reservist — a non-commissioned officer (NCO) — who gave it to Feldstein, who then saw to it that it was transferred to Bild. However, Tel Aviv District Court Judge Alaa Masarwa said at the hearing on Feldstein’s potential remand that prosecutors had presented insufficient evidence for their contention that he had intended to harm national security when he leaked the top-secret IDF document to the press. At the hearing, Masarwa said he had concluded that “sufficient apparent evidence has been presented for this stage of the proceedings regarding the charges of illicit transferal of classified information and its publishing in the media.” Both Feldstein and the NCO had “closed their eyes to the apparent danger” of their actions,” Masarwa said, and “knew these were confidential documents whose transfer was prohibited unless in accordance with clear and strict rules.” Nevertheless, he said he “found weakness in the evidence for the charge of transferring classified information with the intent to harm the state,” referring to the most serious charge, which can carry a sentence of life in prison. |

Israel concerned that Syrian Chemical Weapons could fall into dangerous hands amid rebel gains |
Israeli officials are concerned that the recent Syrian rebel advances, including the capture of military sites belonging to the Assad regime, could lead to chemical weapons falling into dangerous hands, Haaretz reported.
The primary fear is that either Syrian rebels or Iran-backed militias could gain access to advanced weaponry, such as missiles or chemical agents, which would pose a significant threat to Israel. Should such a scenario occur, Israel may be compelled to take actions that could have far-reaching consequences for Syria and the wider Middle East, the report warns. Israel has reportedly sent messages to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad through Russian intermediaries, urging him to maintain control over his territory and prevent Iranian forces from operating within Syria. On Monday, IDF Spokesman Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari confirmed that Israel is closely monitoring the situation in Syria. “We need to make sure that we are not threatened,” he said, highlighting the growing tensions and potential for escalation. |
