UK weather: Temperatures forecast as low as -10C |
Forecasters are predicting a widespread frost across the UK, with the potential for -10C (14F) in some places. Most areas will turn dry on Monday evening and, as skies clear, temperatures are set to plummet overnight. “Rural areas, mainly in Scotland, could dip as low as -10C (14F), while -6C (21F) is possible in parts of Northern Ireland and north Wales,” said Sky News weather producer Chris England. Check the weather in your area “Some of the lowest temperatures are likely to be in those valleys sheltered from the northerly wind,” he added. On Tuesday, England and Wales look mostly fine, although western parts will see a little rain later. Meanwhile, Scotland and Northern Ireland will see afternoon rain, with a spell of snow likely as the rain moves into the cold air. |

Small boat crossings hit 20,000 under Labour |
Over 20,000 people have crossed the English Channel in small boats since Labour entered office, latest official figures have confirmed. The milestone has been reached in the five months since July’s election, after a big uptick in crossings this October compared to last year. The number of crossings this year is still below those seen in 2022, when a surge in late-summer arrivals took numbers to record levels. But they are up on last year’s totals, underscoring the scale of the political challenge facing Sir Keir Starmer’s government. Privately, ministers acknowledge that successfully tackling irregular, illegal migration is key to the public’s perception of the government. |

Iraqi fighters head to Syria to battle rebels but Lebanon’s Hezbollah stays out, sources say |
Hundreds of Iran-backed Iraqi fighters crossed into Syria on Monday to help the government fight rebels who seized Aleppo last week, while Lebanon’s Hezbollah has no plans for now to join them, according to sources. Iran’s constellation of allied regional militia groups, aided by Russian air power, has been integral to the success of pro-government forces in subduing rebels who rose up against President Bashar al-Assad in 2011. But that alliance faces a new test after last week’s lightning advance by rebels in northwest Syria, with Russia focused on war in Ukraine and Hezbollah’s leadership decimated by a war with Israel that ended in a ceasefire last week. The rebel storm of Aleppo is the biggest success of anti-Assad fighters for years. Government forces had held complete control of Aleppo since capturing what was then Syria’s largest city in a siege in 2016, one of the major turning points of a war that has killed hundreds of thousands of people. The head of Syria’s main opposition group abroad, Hadi al-Bahra, told Reuters the rebels were able to seize the city so quickly because Hezbollah and other Iran-backed groups were distracted by their conflict with Israel. |

Biden gives son Hunter ‘unconditional’ pardon |
US President Joe Biden has issued an official pardon for his son Hunter, who was facing sentencing for two criminal cases, despite previously ruling it out. In a statement, the president said his son had been “singled out” and called his cases “a miscarriage of justice”. Hunter Biden pleaded guilty to tax charges earlier in September, and was found guilty of being an illegal drug user in possession of a gun in June – becoming the first child of a sitting president to be a convicted of a crime. Reacting to the pardon, President-elect Donald Trump said: “Does the Pardon given by Joe to Hunter include the [6 January] Hostages, who have now been imprisoned for years? Such an abuse and miscarriage of Justice!” |

In first fire from Lebanon since truce, Hezbollah launches 2 mortars at Mount Dov |
The IDF confirms that Hezbollah launched two mortars at the Mount Dov area on the border between Israel and Lebanon a short while ago. Both projectiles hit open areas, causing no injuries, the army says. It marks the first fire from Lebanon since a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah took effect last week. The IDF has carried out several strikes in Lebanon during the ceasefire against what Israel says were Hezbollah violations of the truce. |

US-Israeli hostage Cpt. Omer Neutra killed on Oct. 7 and his body held in Gaza |
Fourteen months after Hamas’s terror onslaught on October 7, 2023, the Israel Defense Forces on Monday said it had confirmed that Cpt. Omer Maxim Neutra, 21, was killed amid the attack and his body was being held hostage in the Gaza Strip. Neutra, a “lone soldier” from New York — called that because his parents were not in Israel — served as a tank platoon commander in the 7th Armored Brigade’s 77th Battalion. Until now it had been believed that Neutra was alive and being held hostage. On the morning of October 7, 2023, he was stationed in a tank on the Gaza border near the southern community of Nahal Oz. Neutra was the tank commander, Sgt. Shaked Dahan was the driver, Sgt. Nimrod Cohen was the gunner, and Sgt. Oz Daniel was the loader. During the assault on southern Israel, their tank was attacked by Hamas terrorists with RPG fire and explosive devices. All four were then abducted to Gaza. |
