Baruch Dayan HaEmes: Rabbi Shmuel Binyamin Berger zt”l |
The London community, and especially the Satmar kehillah, mourns the loss of a great baal chesed, Rabbi Shmuel Binyamin Berger zt”l, a true pillar of the Satmar community. Rabbi Berger zt”l was a true baal chesed who devoted his life to supporting Torah and chesed institutions worldwide. Born in England to his parents, Rabbi Shalom Zvi Berger zt”l and Mrs. Pradel a”h, he was raised in the ways of Torah and yiras Shamayim. His zeide, Rabbi Getzel Berger zt”l, was a renowned patron of Satmar mosdos. He is survived by his devoted rebbetzin, and children many of whom are marbitzei Torah around the world. Tragically, his petirah comes just days before a grandson’s wedding, which will take place this Wednesday. Yehi zichro baruch. |

Thousands Of Chabad Shluchim Pose For Annual Iconic Photo In Front of Chabad World Headquarters |
The annual “class picture” of Chabad Shluchim took place Sunday morning at the 41st annual International Conference of Chabad-Lubavitch Emissaries (Kinus Hashluchim). The photo, taken under the iconic gables of 770 Eastern Parkway, Chabad headquarters in Brooklyn, N.Y., features thousands of black-hatted rabbis and represents not just an annual conference tradition – it has been captured since 1984 – but also the many faces of Chabad rabbis who bring Yiddishkeit to the world. Rabbis from war-torn Ukraine to ones stationed in the towns along Israel’s hostile borders; rabbis serving college campuses across the United States to those bringing Judaism to communities that have sprung up in the Southwest. All posed in a portrait of Jewish pride and unity. |

London rents fall for first time since November 2010 |
Rents in London have fallen annually for the first time in nearly six years as the pace of price increases has slowed across Britain, according to an index. At £1,280 on average, monthly new lets in London were around £7 cheaper in July than a year earlier, lettings network Countrywide said. The last time rents in the capital recorded a year-on-year fall was in November 2010, when the average monthly rent in London was relatively cheap compared with now, at £923. Across Britain, rents rose 1.5 per cent year-on-year, marking the slowest rate of growth since 2012. The average rent across the country in July for a new let was £951. Earlier this year, the housing market saw a rush of landlords snapping up buy-to-let properties, ahead of a three-percentage-point stamp duty hike for this sector, which came into force on 1 April. Many of these homes may now be appearing on the rental market, widening the choice for tenants and easing the upward pressure on rents. An increase in the number of homes on the market has meant fewer deals are agreed above asking rents, Countrywide said. |

Syrian military sends in reinforcements after rebels seized Aleppo in shock offensive |
The White Helmets, a network of volunteers on the ground in Syria, responded to strikes in Idlib |
Syrian and Russian jets have launched joint air strikes on Syrian rebels who are advancing through the country after seizing its second-largest city. The rebels, led by the Salafi jihadi group, Hayat Tahrir al Sham, took over most of Aleppo in a shock offensive on Saturday. They claim to have also entered the city of Hama. Military air strikes that hit the entrance of Aleppo University Hospital have killed 12 civilians and injured 23 others, the Syrian Civil Defence, known as the White Helmets, has said. The Syrian army and Russia deny attacking civilians and say they have targeted insurgent hideouts. Images from the city of Idlib show the aftermath of a strike with a vehicle on fire, as well as dust and debris covering a street. |

IDF: Ballistic missile launched by Houthis from Yemen intercepted |

Incoming projectile sets off sirens across central Israel; four lightly hurt as they scrambled to reach safe rooms; Iran-backed group takes responsibility. Sirens were triggered across central Israel at around 6:30 a.m. Shrapnel from the interception reportedly fell within Israel. There were no reports of major damage. Four people were lightly injured as they ran for shelter during sirens, the Magen David Adom emergency service said. The surface-to-surface missile was shot down with the Arrow defense system, which is designed to take out ballistic missiles while they are still outside the atmosphere. According to an Israeli Air Force source, the missile was shot down at a “high altitude.” In a statement, the group claimed to have targeted a “vital target” in central Israel. The Houthis also vowed to continue attacks on Israel until “the aggression on the Gaza Strip stops.” |

Dermer to Trump: 60 hostages still alive in Gaza |
Israel’s Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer told President-elect Donald Trump last month that 60 of the 101 hostages being held by Hamas in the Gaza Strip are believed to be alive, Israel Hayom reported on Saturday. The revised estimate is higher than the 51 Israeli intelligence suggested were alive in early November. Officially, 76 out of the 101 are classified as alive. Ninety-seven of the captives were kidnapped from southern Israel during the Hamas-led attack on Oct. 7, 2023. Dermer reportedly conveyed messages to Trump from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during their Nov. 10 meeting at his Mar-a-Lago estate, and also discussed Israel’s plans in Lebanon and Gaza, Iran and Israeli-Saudi normalization. Ruby Chen, the father of abducted soldier Staff Sgt. Itai Chen, who was declared deceased, responded to the Israel Hayom report: “I sincerely hope no one is differentiating between living hostages and those declared fallen. Everyone must be brought home, and this is a sacred duty according to Judaism.” Jerusalem believes that the end of hostilities with Hezbollah in Lebanon and Trump taking office on Jan. 20 create more favorable conditions for a ceasefire agreement with Hamas in Gaza that would see the hostages released, according to Israel Hayom. A proof-of-life video of American-Israeli hostage Edan Alexander, 20, that Hamas released on Saturday is “cruel psychological warfare,” Netanyahu stated on Saturday night. The premier told Alexander’s family on Saturday evening that “he feels the suffering that Edan and the hostages and their families are enduring,” and “promised that Israel is determined to take every action to bring them back home, together with all of the hostages held by the enemy,” his office stated.
