BBC staff quit union after being told to wear colors of Palestinian flag, keffiyeh |
The National Union of Journalists (NUJ) has confirmed to Jewish News that BBC journalists have resigned from the union following its distribution of directives from the Trades Union Congress (TUC) urging workers to wear Palestinian colors or a keffiyeh as part of a Day of Action for Palestine. The TUC’s initiative, set for Thursday, 28 November, calls for a permanent ceasefire, an end to violence in Gaza, and the release of all hostages. However, the recommendation to wear Palestinian attire has sparked outrage among some NUJ members at the BBC, who believe the union has overstepped its bounds. One BBC journalist described the directive as a blatant violation of the BBC’s impartiality standards. Speaking to The Times, they stated, “BBC journalists, who pride themselves on impartiality and who fought to keep their NUJ free of politics, are being encouraged to break the BBC’s editorial guidelines by supporting a political cause.” The staffer further criticized the move as “hypocritical and antisemitic,” adding that they are reconsidering their NUJ membership. Jewish BBC employees have reportedly alerted Nigel Lewis, the corporation’s director of HR, who has raised the issue with HR leads across the organization. BBC Security has also been informed of potential flashpoints that could arise from staff wearing Palestinian flag colors or keffiyehs. In response to the backlash, the NUJ issued a statement to its members emphasizing, “Clearly, members working across the BBC and in public service broadcasting have important duties in relation to impartiality and work within social media guidelines the NUJ would not wish members to breach.” Despite the union’s efforts to address the controversy, the situation appears to have shaken its membership. Speculation in Jewish chat groups suggests that as many as a dozen additional NUJ members may resign over the incident. |

Daniel Khalife found guilty of spying for Iran |
A former British soldier who escaped from Wandsworth Prison has been found guilty of spying for Iran. Daniel Khalife, 23, who was a lance corporal in the Royal Signals, used a sling made from trousers worn by inmates working in the kitchen to cling to the underside of a food delivery lorry on 6 September last year. MI5, the Ministry of Defence and counter-terrorism police launched a nationwide manhunt, fearing Khalife would try to flee to Tehran or get to the Iranian embassy in London. Woolwich Crown Court heard that while on the run he bought a mobile phone to call his handlers, who used the code name “David Smith”, and sent the message: “I wait.” But Khalife was arrested on the morning of 9 September when he was spotted riding a stolen mountain bike along the canal towpath in Northolt, west London – about 14 miles away from Wandsworth Prison. He initially pleaded not guilty to an escape charge but changed his plea after describing the break-out to jurors, saying it showed “what a foolish idea it was to have someone of my skillset in prison”. Khalife, who first contacted an Iranian spy soon after he joined the Army aged 16, claimed he wanted to be a “double agent” and “thought he could be James Bond” but had only passed on fake or useless information. |

Russia launched its largest aerial attack on Ukraine in months, hitting energy infrastructure across the country, killing at least five people and causing widespread damage. Strikes were reported in several major cities, from Odesa in the south, Dnipro in the east to Rivne in the west. In the capital Kyiv, which has seen near-daily strikes since the start of September, residents were forced to shelter in the metro network. Two people were killed in a drone strike in the Mykolaiv region, while six others including two children were injured. A further two were killed in Odesa in an attack which also injured a 17-year-old boy, and a woman was killed in her car in Lviv region, the governor said. The last comparable attack happened on August 28, when Russia launched 127 missiles and 109 attack drones at Ukraine, the Ukrainian Air Force said. The overnight strikes triggered blackouts in several regions, including Odesa where heating, water and electricity supplies have been cut and hospitals are running on power from generators. |

Hamas calls for Gaza ceasefire as Lebanon truce takes key ally Hezbollah out of fight |
Hamas indicated Wednesday that it was ready for a truce in Gaza as its key ally Hezbollah appeared to lay down arms after a ceasefire with Israel went into place, effectively leaving the Gaza terror group fighting alone. “We have informed mediators in Egypt, Qatar and Turkey that Hamas is ready for a ceasefire agreement and a serious deal to exchange prisoners,” a senior Hamas official told the AFP news agency, at the same time accusing Israel of obstructing an agreement. Hezbollah, which began firing rockets into Israel on October 8, 2023, one day after the Hamas massacre in southern Israel that killed some 1,200 people and saw another 251 taken hostage, had initially vowed that it would not stop fighting Israel until there was also a ceasefire deal in Gaza. A senior Hamas official tried to play down the effects of Hezbollah signing up to a separate deal. “Hamas appreciates the right of Lebanon and Hezbollah to reach an agreement that protects the people of Lebanon and we hope that this agreement will pave the way to reaching an agreement that ends the war of genocide against our people in Gaza,” Sami Abu Zuhri told Reuters. Abu Zuhri blamed previous failures to reach a ceasefire deal that would end the Gaza war on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has repeatedly accused Hamas of foiling efforts. |

Ceasefire day 2: IAF strikes missile storage facility |
The IDF confirmed on Thursday that Israeli Air Force (IAF) aircraft targeted a Hezbollah facility in southern Lebanon used for storing mid-range rockets. According to the IDF, the strike followed “terrorist activity” identified at the site. In a statement, the IDF emphasized its presence in southern Lebanon and commitment to addressing ceasefire violations: “The IDF remains in southern Lebanon and is acting to enforce violations of the ceasefire agreement.” Earlier in the day, an IDF unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) targeted a vehicle in Markaba, a village near the Israeli border in southern Lebanon. Local reports indicated that several individuals were injured in the strike. The IDF clarified that the UAV struck near the vehicle to distance it from the border area. Related Developments The IDF has also detained four Hezbollah operatives, including a local commander, who entered restricted areas. The military reiterated its determination to address any ceasefire violations. On Thursday afternoon, the IDF reported spotting several suspects arriving in vehicles at multiple locations in southern Lebanon, breaching the ceasefire terms. The IDF responded with fire, underscoring its continued enforcement efforts: “The IDF remains in southern Lebanon and will actively enforce violations of the ceasefire agreement.” |

A series of Israeli strikes on border crossings between Lebanon and Syria just before a ceasefire with Hezbollah took effect Wednesday morning were intended to set back the terror group’s smuggling efforts, while driving home as a stark warning to Damascus that Israel will take severe action to prevent attempts to rearm Hezbollah with Iranian weapons via Syrian territory. |
