Holiday Home Rejection Sparks Call for Greater Kiddush Hashem

Dear Editor,

While I was deeply upset to receive such a response, I also recognise that it contains an important lesson for all of us. If previous guests from our community behaved in the manner described, it represents not only a serious inconvenience to the owners but also a chilul Hashem, affecting the reputation of every frum Jew who comes afterwards.

We should always remember that our conduct reflects on the wider Jewish community. Whether we are staying in a hotel, holiday cottage or anywhere else, we have a responsibility to leave a positive impression through honesty, courtesy and respect for other people’s property.

The email speaks for itself.

Peter’s email:

Hello Michael,

We have had kosher guests staying at Birch End in the past. They left the house in a mess, with none of the crockery, pans and other items returned to where we had left them. Furniture had been moved and damaged, and the property required a great deal of cleaning.

We would also have had to turn around Birch End and another cottage on the same day if we accepted your booking. Previous guests overcrowded the house, even requiring a coach to transport everyone away.

Based on the information in your enquiry, we are concerned that we would face similar problems again. Regrettably, we have therefore decided not to offer Birch End to you.

Regards,

Peter

I sincerely hope those who need to see this message will take it to heart. We all have a responsibility to ensure that our behaviour creates a Kiddush Hashem wherever we go.

A concerned reader, Manchester

Working Together for a Healthier Kehillah

More and more children are finding school difficult, and a growing number are struggling to remain within the system. We are also seeing increasing numbers of children being asked to leave school or finding themselves without a suitable educational framework.

Many good children are facing challenges both inside and outside the classroom, and the situation appears to be growing increasingly complex. How much more can our community absorb?

At the same time, more people are seeking therapy and professional support. While this can often be beneficial, the outcomes are not always sufficient. More people are also turning to medication. These trends raise important questions for all of us.

The more families we meet, the more we see the same struggles repeating themselves. Many of these challenges affect hundreds of families across the kehillah. We believe that by working together, sharing experiences and learning from one another, we can better understand and respond to the nisyonos of our generation.

There is a growing need to strengthen our systems so that they are better equipped to meet today’s challenges, rather than simply responding to one crisis after another. We must focus on building healthier foundations instead of only attempting to repair the damage afterwards.

This applies across many areas of life, including sholom bayis, chinuch, abuse, the impact of technology and financial pressures, including the consequences of living beyond one’s means.

We must invest more in creating healthy, stable and supportive families.

We invite members of the community to share their views. Please email us briefly with your thoughts. Those wishing to join our group email should send their name, address and email address. The group is open to adults only.

Please state clearly if you would like your comments to remain confidential. Kindly note that we are unable to accept anonymous submissions.

Trump claims US will strike Iran’s Pickaxe Mountain ‘probably pretty soon’

US President Donald Trump claimed Tuesday that the US will be striking Iran’s Pickaxe Mountain “probably pretty soon,” amid reports that Tehran has moved nuclear centrifuges, and possibly even enriched uranium, to the secretive underground enrichment site.

Trump, in a meeting with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, clarified that those reports haven’t been confirmed before claiming that such a development “doesn’t mean anything” anyway because Iran doesn’t have access to its stockpiles of enriched uranium needed to create a bomb.

The US has claimed that Iran can’t reach the nuclear material it possesses because it is buried deep underground after US strikes on three of Iran’s nuclear sites last year. Trump insists that the US is monitoring those sites to make sure that the stockpiles are not retrieved.

Regardless, Trump declared, “We’ll be hitting that area probably pretty soon, and there’s not a thing they can do about it.”

“They’re trying to possibly reconstitute a site. We’ll hit that site. Any site where they’ve been thinking about nuclear, we’ll be hitting it very powerfully,” he added.

Meeting Trump in DC, Aoun says Lebanon will end hostility with Israel ‘forever’

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun met with US President Donald Trump in Washington on Tuesday, where he declared that his country will permanently end hostilities with Israel and asked for backing in his efforts to disarm Hezbollah. At the meeting, Trump said he would be open to speaking directly with the Iran-backed terror group if Beirut asked.

Aoun’s visit came just hours after Lebanese troops deployed to an area in southern Lebanon that Israeli troops had withdrawn from, in the first test of the US-backed “pilot zone” plan for the eventual full withdrawal of the IDF from the south, pending the disarmament of Hezbollah in the area. The handover was not without incident, however, as the Lebanese army reported Israeli fire toward their troops, which the IDF said were “warning shots” at Lebanese soldiers who encroached on the Israeli-held buffer zone.

Meeting Aoun at the White House, Trump said Lebanon had been “a very mistreated country” that had been “hit hard” for decades.

“We’re going to help it. We’re going to help it a lot,” he told reporters while sitting next to Aoun. “We are going to solve a lot of problems. We’ve already solved some of them for Lebanon. There’s a Hezbollah problem, but we’ve done some things that I think the world will take notice.”

“I would speak to Hezbollah. I speak to everybody. I’ll speak to people that a lot of people think I shouldn’t be speaking to, and things work out,” Trump said, adding that he would only talk to the Iran-backed terror group if Aoun asked him to do so. “If the president wanted me to speak to Hezbollah, I would.”

Mamdani acknowledges he lacks authority as NYC mayor to arrest Netanyahu

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani acknowledges he lacks “the independent legal authority” to arrest Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in a video statement denouncing the premier as “a war criminal” who he accuses of being “the architect of a horrific genocide against the Palestinian people.”

Mamdani says his administration “reviewed every avenue available” to determine if he could have Netanyahu arrested over the ICC arrest warrant against him, which he claims the US federal government has the power to enforce — though Washington is not a party to the Rome Statute recognizing the court’s authority.

“I want to be equally clear: Benjamin Netanyahu is not welcome in New York City, nor is any other war criminal at large,” claims Mamdani.

Israel believes that Iran transferred some of its 440 kilograms of highly enriched uranium to the Pickaxe Mountain site after the 12-day Israel-Iran war in June 2025.

The report quoted a single Israeli source assessing that “part” of the stockpile of 60% enriched uranium was moved to the fortified underground site.

An unsourced report says Pickaxe Mountain, which was constructed to be impervious to bombing, may well be able to withstand the kind of bunker-buster attacks the US used against three other Iranian nuclear facilities in the June 2025 war.

The Wall Street Journal reported earlier today that Israel assesses that Iran moved thousands of its advanced centrifuges to the site as well. Experts such as David Albright say 60%-enriched uranium can potentially be further enriched to weapons grade in a matter of weeks or even days.

Pickaxe Mountain has not been hit by the US or Israel yet.

US President Donald Trump claimed today that the US will attack the site “probably pretty soon.”

Iran has not allowed the UN’s nuclear watchdog access to the Pickaxe Mountain site. And International Atomic Energy Agency head Rafael Grossi has said Iran in 2021 declared its “intention to have nuclear activity” there.
