PM: I’ll only sign US tariffs deal if it suits UK |
![]() |
Sir Keir Starmer has pledged to only sign a trade deal with the US that is in the UK’s “national interest,” as he warned about the impact of President Trump’s tariffs. The prime minister said the import taxes announced by the US president last week – which have prompted economic turbulence across the world – would pose a “huge challenge for our future”. The UK is hoping to sign an agreement to limit the impact on the UK, which has been hit with a 10% “baseline” import duty, with a 25% tariff on British cars. The UK is considering changes to taxes on big tech firms as part of a deal. |

Trump threatens new 50% tariffs on China |
![]() |
Donald Trump has threatened China with an extra tariff of 50% on goods imported into the US if it does not withdraw a countermeasure it announced on Friday. In a post on his social media platform, external, Truth Social, the US president said he will introduce the extra tariff unless China withdraws its own 34% counter-tariff on American goods, which it announced on Friday. Trump originally imposed a tax of 34% on Chinese imports last Wednesday, as he announced tariffs on dozens of US trading partners. If he does impose the additional 50%, US companies will pay a total rate of 104% on Chinese imports. In his post on Truth Social, Trump said China had introduced its countermeasure “despite my warning that any country that Retaliates against the U.S. by issuing additional Tariffs… will be immediately met with new and substantially higher Tariffs”. The escalating tension between the US and China has increased fears of a global trade war. The tariffs would come as a major blow to China’s manufacturers, for whom the US is a key market for exports. Uncertainty around the tariffs led to a turbulent day on global stock markets. European markets closed lower after Asian share indexes nosedived, with Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index falling by more than 13%, its biggest one-day fall since 1997. |

Trump Announces Direct Negotiations with Iran, Tehran Says They’re Only Indirect |
![]() |
Standing next to Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, U.S. President Donald Trump announced Monday that his administration had begun direct negotiations with Iran regarding its nuclear program. Tehran quickly pushed back, denying any such engagement, saying that Oman is acting as a mediator between the two. Trump also delivered a stern warning: “If the talks aren’t successful… it’ll be a very bad day for Iran.” Following a meeting with Netanyahu in the Oval Office, Trump told reporters that discussions were already underway and scheduled to continue Saturday. “We’re having direct talks with Iran, and they’ve started,” Trump said. “It’ll go on Saturday. We have a very big meeting, and we’ll see what can happen. And I think everybody agrees that doing a deal would be preferable.” |

Egypt said to float release of 8 hostages in new truce; Israel denies receiving terms |
![]() |
Egypt has put forward a new proposal for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, according to an Arab report Monday, though an Israeli official said that Jerusalem has not received any new offer from Cairo. The London-based Saudi newspaper Asharq Al-Awsat reported, citing an informed Egyptian source, that the new proposal provides for the return of eight living hostages and the bodies of eight slain hostages in exchange for the release of large numbers of Palestinian terrorists and security prisoners and a truce lasting between 40 and 70 days. The source said that the proposal represents a compromise between a Hamas offer to release five hostages in return for a 50-day truce and an Israeli demand for the release of 11 living hostages. The report also said that, according to the new proposal, the eight living hostages would not be released all at once but in stages. So far, neither side has issued a final response to the proposal, it said. |

US reportedly sends Patriot, THAAD systems to Israel amid Iran tension |
![]() |
The United States has deployed two Patriot batteries and one THAAD air defense battery to Israel, according to Arab sources published in Al-Arabiya and Al-Hadath on Saturday night. This military reinforcement occurs against the backdrop of escalating tensions between the US, Israel, and Iran and the ongoing ballistic missile attacks on Israel by the Iran-backed Yemen Houthi terrorists. President Donald Trump has recently warned Iran that if it does not cooperate with the US in its efforts to dismantle its nuclear program, will see “bombing the likes they have never seen before.” The THAAD (Terminal High Altitude Area Defense) system, manufactured by Lockheed Martin, provides advanced protection against short, medium, and long-range ballistic missiles. The system boasts a perfect 100% interception rate in flight tests and can neutralize threats both within and beyond the atmosphere. Comprising five main components – launchers, radar, a command and control unit, and support equipment – the THAAD represents cutting-edge missile defense technology. According to the Arab report, the US has transferred two such batteries to Israel. This isn’t the first THAAD deployment to Israel, as the system was previously transferred during the ongoing conflict about six months ago under the Biden administration. The system demonstrated its effectiveness in December when it successfully intercepted a missile launched from Yemen. |
