Charedi protest against the Children’s Wellbeing and Schools Bill |
According to Hamodia Newspaper (To subscribewww.hamodia.co.uk) The controversial Children’s Wellbeing and Schools Bill, which would have significant negative impact on yeshivas and the chareidi school system in general, passed a third reading in the House of Commons on Tuesday, by 382 votes to 104. While the Secretary of State for Education, Bridget Phillipson said at the end of the debate that the new measures will “deliver the brighter future that every child in our country deserves,” the Shadow Secretary of State, Laura Trott condemned the bill roundly, citing educational experts. She said that while she agrees “absolutely with the principles” of the safeguarding section of the bill, the second part is “the policy equivalent of a wrecking ball.” She described it as “discredited…disastrous for school standards” and said that her party “will never stop fighting it.” Stephen James, the Founder and CEO of the Conservative Friends of Education, has recently described the Bill as “a fundamental reordering of the relationship between families, faith communities and the state.” He said that “Behind its benevolent title lurks legislation that threatens to bulldoze centuries of educational diversity and parental autonomy in the name of standardisation.” |
