Interest rate cut to 4.5% – as Bank signals more to come

The Bank of England has cut interest rates by another quarter percentage point, bringing down the cost of borrowing to 4.5%, writes economics and data Ed Conway.

And in a sign that households can expect more cuts in the months to come, two members of the Bank’s Monetary Policy Committee said they would have preferred to reduce rates even more, by a full half percentage point.

The Bank slashed its forecast for economic growth, however, forecasting that the economy will skirt clear of a formal recession only by the narrowest margin in the coming months, and downgraded its estimate of the economy’s ability to generate income.

And in a further blow to the chancellor, it said her latest growth plans, unveiled in a speech last week, will add nothing to gross domestic product growth in its forecast horizon.

The Bank’s governor, Andrew Bailey, said: “It will be welcome news that we have been able to cut interest rates again today. We’ll be monitoring the UK economy and global developments very closely and taking a gradual and careful approach to reducing rates further.

“Low and stable inflation is the foundation of a healthy economy and it’s the Bank of England’s job to ensure that.”

The Bank’s forecasts seem to indicate that there will be at least two further rate cuts in the coming years, and that that will be enough to bring inflation down towards its 2 % target. However, investors are betting on more cuts.

The Monetary Policy Report and Bank forecasts released alongside the decision today signal that the economy is due to have another few years of weakness.

Trump signs executive order sanctioning International Criminal Court

Donald Trump has signed an executive order sanctioning the International Criminal Court (ICC).

The order includes financial sanctions and visa restrictions against ICC officials and their family members found to have assisted in investigations of US citizens or allies.

The order claims the ICC has engaged in “illegitimate and baseless actions targeting America and our close ally Israel”,

It says the ICC has “further abused its power by issuing baseless arrest warrants” targeting Benjamin Netanyahu and Israel’s former defence minister Yoav Gallant.

For context: The ICC issued arrest warrants for Israel’s prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu, former defence minister Yoav Gallant and several Hamas leaders last November.

The court said there was reason to believe Netanyahu and Gallant used “starvation as a method of warfare” by restricting humanitarian aid and intentionally targeting civilians in Israel’s campaign in Gaza – something Israeli officials dismissed as false and antisemitic.

Trump says Israel would hand Gaza to US when war ends, no American troops needed there

US President Donald Trump on Thursday expanded on his plan to push out Gaza’s 2.3 million residents, pledging that the Strip “would be turned over to the United States by Israel at the conclusion of fighting,” and rejecting American boots on the ground as a precondition for the reconstruction of the devastated enclave.

Given that there is currently a ceasefire, his use of the phrase “at the conclusion of the fighting,” appeared to at least leave the door open for the possibility that the war will resume, per the demand of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s right-wing flank.

Writing on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump specified: “The Gaza Strip would be turned over to the United States by Israel at the conclusion of fighting.”

Gazans “would have already been resettled in far safer and more beautiful communities, with new and modern homes, in the region,” he continued, apparently repeating his suggestion that the Strip’s population would be permanently displaced, despite a statement to the contrary by the top US diplomat on Wednesday. “They would actually have a chance to be happy, safe and free.”

“The US, working with great development teams from all over the world, would slowly and carefully begin the construction of what would become one of the greatest and most spectacular developments of its kind on Earth,” Trump continued, adding that “no soldiers by the US would be needed.” Trump’s Mideast envoy was said to have offered similar assurances to Republican lawmakers amid their concerns about foreign entanglements.

The US president signed off: “Stability for the region would reign!!!”

2 soldiers killed, 8 wounded in Gaza as winds bring surveillance platform down on troops

Two Israeli soldiers were killed and eight were wounded when a crane used by the military collapsed on them overnight in the Gaza Strip, the army announced Thursday morning.

They were named as Sgt. First Class (res.) Nadav Cohen, 21, from Beit Hanan, and Staff Sgt. Nachman Refael Ben Ami, 20, from Eilat. Both soldiers were of the Golani Brigade’s 51st Battalion.

Of the eight wounded soldiers, one was listed in serious condition.

The incident happened around midnight at a position near the Israel-Gaza border.

According to an initial IDF probe, strong winds that swept across the region caused a crane operated by the military to fall over during the night, crashing down on the soldiers.

The crane was holding aloft a platform containing surveillance equipment and antennas, used by the IDF in Gaza during the war to provide mobile observation for troops.

As it toppled over, the crane came down on a fortified military post, landing on the tent where the soldiers were.

The IDF has opened an investigation into the incident.
