Putin ratchets up nuclear threat after Ukraine fires US-supplied missiles at Russia |
![]() |
Moscow said Tuesday that Ukraine had fired US-supplied long-range missiles into its territory for the first time since Washington authorized such strikes, as Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree broadening the justification for using nuclear weapons. With neither side showing any sign of relenting, Putin officially authorized the use of nuclear weapons in the case of a conventional attack by any nation that is supported by a nuclear power. Putin signed the decree shortly before Moscow confirmed that Ukraine had fired six US-made ATACMS missiles early Tuesday at a military facility in Russia’s Bryansk region that borders Ukraine. It said air defenses shot down five of them and damaged one more. Washington this week said it had cleared Ukraine to use long-range ATACMS, or Army Tactical Missile System, weapons against military targets inside Russia — a long-standing Ukrainian request, but one that could change the contours of the war, now in its 1,000th day. Elsewhere, a Russian strike in the eastern Ukrainian region of Sumy gutted a Soviet-era residential building and killed at least 12 people, including a child. |

Touring Gaza, PM vows Hamas won’t return to power, offers $5 million for hostages |
![]() |
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed on Tuesday that Hamas would not rule in Gaza after the war, seemingly rejecting efforts to reach a ceasefire with the terror group still partially intact as he visited an Israeli military position in the enclave. The premier also reiterated an offer to lavishly pay Gazans who turn over Israeli hostages, upping the reward to $5 million for each captive, after previously suggesting Israel would pay “several million” for their recovery. The visit came as Israel presses an offensive in northern Gaza to root out resurgent Hamas activity, and amid dire warnings about the condition of the Israeli hostages who remain captive some thirteen months after they were abducted by Hamas-led terrorists on October 7, 2023. |

Erdogan admits to blocking Herzog’s flight to COP29 from using Turkish airspace |
![]() |
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan confirms that Turkey had barred President Isaac Herzog from its airspace earlier this week, forcing him to cancel his planned visit to the United Nations COP29 climate conference in Baku, Azerbaijan. Herzog’s office announced on Saturday that he would not be attending the conference due to “security considerations.” During a press conference at the G20 Leaders Summit in Brazil, Erdogan confirms that Herzog was prevented from flying over Turkey in the official Wing of Zion airplane, due to Turkey’s opposition to the war on Hamas in Gaza. “With regard to the Israeli president going to Azerbaijan for the COP summit, we did not allow him to use our airspace,” Turkish media cites Erdogan as saying in response to a question about Turkish pressure on Israel to end the fighting. “There are other areas, there are other opportunities, we told him to travel from there… but I do not know whether he was able to go or not.” |
