An Air India passenger plane bound for London crashed into a medical college in Ahmedabad after takeoff Thursday, killing at least 240 people in one of India’s worst airline disasters in decades, officials said.

Vidhi Chaudhary, a top state police officer in the northwestern city of Ahmedabad, said medical students who were in a college hostel when the plane hit the building are among the dead.

“Most of the bodies have been charred beyond recognition,” she said.

Indian Home Minister Amit Shah confirmed that a single passenger survived the crash and he met him at the hospital. A doctor said he had examined the survivor, whom he identified as Vishwashkumar Ramesh.

“He was disoriented with multiple injuries all over his body,” Dr. Dhaval Gameti told The Associated Press. “But he seems to be out of danger.”

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wrote on X that he was “saddened to learn of the tragic Air India crash that has taken the lives of 242 men, women and children. My thoughts and prayers are with the families of the fallen.”

President Isaac Herzog wrote that his “thoughts are with the victims’ families and all those grieving across India and around the world following the devastating plane crash in Ahmedabad. In this time of mourning, we send our support to the brave rescue services, and stand in solidarity with President Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the people of India.”

Black smoke billowed from the site where the plane crashed and burst into flames near the airport in Ahmedabad, a city of more than 5 million and the capital of Gujarat, Modi’s home state.

Israel launched a major military offensive against Iran overnight in what officials are calling Operation “Am K’lavi” – “A Nation Like a Lion Cub” – aimed at crippling Iran’s nuclear infrastructure and deterring what Israeli leaders describe as a growing existential threat.

The coordinated airstrikes targeted multiple strategic locations inside Tehran, including the area surrounding the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) headquarters and the Shahid Mahallati military district. Explosions lit up the skyline as residents reported the sound of fighter jets and missile strikes overhead.

Sources indicate that Israeli and Iranian fighter jets engaged in direct combat over the capital – a rare and dangerous development marking a sharp escalation in the region. One of the key figures believed to have been targeted in the initial attack is Iranian Chief of Staff General Mohammad Baqari, though his status remains unconfirmed.

As news of the assault spread, Iranian leadership convened emergency meetings, and air raid sirens were triggered in Yerushalayim (Jerusalem) amid fears of retaliatory strikes by Iran or its regional proxies.

In response, Israeli Defence Minister Yisrael Katz declared a state of emergency across the entire country, urging civilians to seek shelter and adhere strictly to Home Front Command instructions.

“We expect retaliation. This may come in the form of missiles or drones targeting civilian areas. Every Israeli must take this situation seriously,” said Katz.

The Israeli government has confirmed it is prepared for up to ten days of potential Iranian retaliation, including from Hezbollah, the Houthis, and other aligned militias.

Meanwhile, the United States has distanced itself from the strike. In an official statement, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said:

“Tonight, Israel took unilateral action against Iran. We are not involved in the strikes and remain focused on protecting American forces in the region. Iran must not view US assets as targets.”

Former President Donald Trump, who had earlier in the day remarked that an Israeli strike was “not imminent,” held a late-night security meeting at the White House as events unfolded. Though US-Iran negotiations were scheduled to continue in Oman, their status is now uncertain.

Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv has suspended all flights. One plane carrying HaGaon Harav Azriel Auerbach was diverted to Cyprus due to the airspace closure.

Israel has long warned that if diplomacy fails, it would act alone to stop Iran from achieving nuclear weapons capability. With this overnight action, that warning has been made manifest — and the world now awaits Iran’s response.

Reports: US told Israel it will not provide offensive support for Iran strike

The US has told Israel it will not participate in any potential strike on Iran’s nuclear program in the coming days, according to reports in The Wall Street Journal and Axios.

The Journal cites an official with knowledge of the matter as saying Washington will not provide any offensive support for an Israeli strike. Axios quotes two US sources and an Israeli official as saying the same.

Axios notes it is still possible that the US will offer other support, including in logistics and intelligence, while adding that it is likely to assist Israel in defending itself from any Iranian retaliation, should a strike take place.

The Journal says that though Washington is not providing official support for the Israeli threats of military action, officials do hope the pressure will lead to Iranian concessions in negotiations still taking place between the sides through Omani mediation.

The IDF issues a new evacuation warning in the southern Gaza Strip, slightly expanding a large no-go zone.

“The IDF is operating with great force in the areas where you are located to destroy the capabilities of the terror organizations,” the IDF’s Arabic-language spokesman Col. Avichay Adraee says on X, attaching a map showing the areas that are to be evacuated.

Palestinian civilians in the area are called to head west.

Strauss Group, one of the country’s largest food product manufacturers, says it will launch another round of price hikes on some of its products, mainly coffee and chocolate products, citing a continued increase in the costs of raw materials.

Prices will increase on July 1 and will affect 15% of the food manufacturer’s products. The cost of chocolate bars will rise by up to 15.8%, and cocoa powder by up to 16%. The price of Turkish coffee will increase by up to 5%, coffee beans by up to 6%, and instant coffee by up to 8%.

It marks the second round of increases this year after Strauss raised prices in January. The food manufacturer says coffee and cocoa prices, and the cost of Robusta and Arabica coffee beans have jumped by up to 49% in the last six months.

Strauss states that the price update only partially compensates for the costs of raw materials.
