Hundreds of marines to be deployed to LA – as California prepares to sue Trump government
picture hole

A battalion of 500 U.S. Marines are mobilizing to Los Angeles to respond to anti-immigration enforcement riots.

The Marines will be tasked with protecting federal property and federal personnel, according to a senior defense official, and the deployment is open-ended.

The Marines will not be carrying out a law enforcement role, but it’s unclear what their use of force rules are if protesters throw things or spit at them.

The new deployment comes after President Donald Trump sent some 2,000 National Guardsmen to the riot-racked city over the weekend.

The Marines are from the 2nd Battalion, 7th Marines at Twentynine Palms, California.

Russia Launches Largest Drone Attack of War as Peace Talks Stall

Russia launched almost 500 drones at Ukraine in the biggest overnight drone bombardment of the three-year war, the Ukrainian air force said Monday, as the Kremlin presses its summer offensive amid direct peace talks that have yet to deliver progress on stopping the fighting.

Despite the difficulties in reaching a ceasefire, Russia and Ukraine swapped another batch of prisoners of war Monday.

In addition to the 479 drones, 20 missiles of various types were fired at different parts of Ukraine from Sunday to Monday, according to the air force, which said the barrage targeted mainly central and western areas.

Ukraine’s air force said its air defenses intercepted and destroyed 277 drones and 19 missiles, claiming only 10 drones or missiles hit their targets. Officials said one person was injured. It was not possible to independently verify the claims.

A recent escalation in aerial attacks has coincided with a renewed Russian battlefield push along eastern and northeastern parts of the roughly 1,000-kilometer (620-mile) front line.

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said late Sunday that in some of those areas, “the situation is very difficult.” He provided no details.

Ukraine is short-handed on the front line against its bigger enemy and needs more military support from its Western partners, especially air defenses. But uncertainty about the U.S. policy on the war has fueled doubts about how much help Kyiv can count on.

Ukraine has produced some stunning counter-punches, however. Its June 1 drone attack on distant Russian air bases was unprecedented in its scope and sophistication.

Coalition Crisis: Torah Leaders Back Dissolution of Knesset
picture hole

A real draameh is unfolding in Eretz Yisroel, as the Gedolei Yisroel from Degel HaTorah have given a clear psak: if the government can’t agree on a proper Giyus law, it’s time to dissolve the Knesset.

Late last night, two of the Roshei Yeshiva, the gaonim Maran Harav Dov Landau shlit”a and Rav Maran Harav Moshe Hillel Hirsch shlit”a, held a long and serious meeting. After deep consideration, they decided that the time has come to pull support from the coalition and vote for new elections this Wednesday.

Rav Hirsch reportedly said, “If there’s no progress on the Giyus law, then there’s no taam for us to stay in the government.” Rav Landau added sharply, “When there’s pressure on those who sit and learn, the sakonah is worse than Iran.”

Interestingly, it has now come to light that the first Gadol who supported dissolving the government was the Gerer Rebbe shlit”a—already half a year ago. But the Gedolim from Degel HaTorah felt it was important to wait until after Shavuos, to give time for Bibi to work something out. Now that it’s clear nothing moved and the entire situation is heading against the oilam haTorah, they’ve decided there’s no choice but to vote in favor of dissolution.

And it’s not just them—Shas is also changing direction. Their spokesman, R’ Asher Medina, said, “With no achdus on the Giyus law, Shas will support breaking up the Knesset.”

Last week, the Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah of Agudas Yisroel already came out strong in favor of new elections.

Unless there’s a major shift in the coming days, Wednesday’s vote could mark the beginning of a new chapter in Israeli politics.

Detained flotilla activists refused to watch film of Hamas atrocities on Oct. 7

Defense Minister Israel Katz says the detained activists from the boat that intended to break Israel’s blockade on the Gaza Strip refused to view a video showing atrocities committed by the Hamas terror group on October 7, 2023.

“Greta [Thunberg] and her flotilla companions were taken into a room upon their arrival for a screening of the horror film of the October 7 massacre, and when they saw what it was about, they refused to continue watching,” Katz says in statement.

“The antisemitic flotilla members are turning a blind eye to the truth and have proven once again that they prefer the murderers to the murdered and continue to ignore the atrocities committed by Hamas against Jewish and Israeli women, adults, and children,” he adds.

The detained activists are set to be deported, and the small amount of aid they brought will be sent into Gaza, Israeli officials have said.

Trump says call with Netanyahu went ‘very well’ and included discussion on Iran

US President Donald Trump says his conversation with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu earlier today went “very well” and covered a variety of issues, including the ongoing Iran nuclear talks.

He reveals that the US has a “meeting with Iran on Thursday,” without specifying whether that is another round of nuclear talks.

“We’re trying to make a deal [with Iran] so that there’s no destruction and death,” Trump says, adding that the Iranians are “tough negotiators.”

Asked what the main impediment is to a deal, Trump tells reporters during a White House event, “They’re just asking for things that you can’t do.”

He says Iran doesn’t want to give up its ability to enrich uranium, which Trump says the US won’t allow, even though Washington’s proposal for a nuclear deal reportedly allows Tehran to enrich at low levels on its soil for a temporary period of time.

“They have given us their thoughts on the deal, and I said it’s just not acceptable,” he adds, without specifying whether Iran has submitted its response to the US nuclear deal proposal.

Asked about the still-stuck hostage talks between Israel and Hamas, Trump says they are ongoing “and Iran actually is involved.” He does not elaborate as to what he means. Iran to date has not been involved in the Gaza ceasefire talks.

“We’ll see what’s going to happen with Gaza. We want to get the hostages back,” Trump adds.

He is also asked about the IDF’s seizure of the ship ferrying climate activist Greta Thunberg, which sought to break Israel’s blockade of Gaza.

Trump calls Thunberg a “strange” and “angry person,” recommending that she undergo an “anger management class.”
