Two dead, 11 injured, as driver rams car into crowds then shoots himself in German city of Mannheim

Two people have died and 11 others have been injured after a car was deliberately rammed into a crowd in the western German city of Mannheim, before the driver shot himself.

Among those hurt, five people are in a serious condition after a black vehicle hit pedestrians on Monday, according to German police and prosecutors.

At a news conference, reporters were told the driver intentionally rammed his car into people and is being investigated for murder and attempted murder.

They said the man shot himself in the mouth when he was arrested and is in a stable condition in hospital. Investigators are examining the possibility he may have psychological issues.

The state’s interior minister Thomas Strobl said a 40-year-old man from the nearby state of Rhineland-Palatinate had been detained.

“As far as the specific motivation of the crime is concerned, we have no indication of an extremist or religious background at the moment,” he said.

Police spokesperson Stefan Wilhelm said the incident unfolded on Monday at around 12.15pm local time in a pedestrianised part of Mannheim’s Paradeplatz area.

Markets sink as Trump confirms tariffs on Canada, Mexico and China

President Donald Trump is moving forward with 25% tariffs on goods imported from Canada and Mexico into the US, saying that time had run out to reach a deal.

US stock markets sank in response to the measures, which have been threatened since earlier this year and are due to go into effect on Tuesday.

An additional 10% tariff on Chinese imports is also expected to come into force, leaving all three of America’s top three trade partners facing significantly higher trade barriers than just a few weeks ago.

“No room left for Mexico or for Canada,” Trump said at the White House on Monday. “The tariffs, you know, they’re all set. They go into effect tomorrow.”

Trump threatened to impose the tariffs – which is a tax that is added to a product when it enters a country – on Canada, Mexico and China in response to what he says is the unacceptable flow of illegal drugs and undocumented migrants into the US.

He had already imposed a 10% tariff on Chinese exports to the US last month, meaning goods from the country now face a levy of at least 20%.

All three countries have said they will retaliate against the US in response to the tariffs, raising the prospect of a widening trade war.

Israeli Defense Minister Warns: ‘Without Hostage Release, the Gates of Hell Will Open on Gaza’

Following Hamas’ refusal to release hostages and the halt of humanitarian aid to Gaza, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz outlined the next steps, declaring on Monday night: “If Hamas does not release the hostages soon, the gates of Gaza will be locked, and the gates of hell will open.”

“We will resume fighting, and they will face the IDF with unprecedented force and tactics—until a decisive victory is achieved,” Katz stated, emphasizing, “We will never allow Hamas to rule Gaza again.”

Defense Minister Katz concluded with a firm commitment: “This war will end with two clear achievements—securing the release of all our hostages and crushing Hamas’ rule in Gaza.”

In a statement moments ago, the IDF says that a short while ago it struck a military site where weapons belonging to the previous Syrian regime were stored in the area of
Al Qardahah in Syria.

“Due to recent developments in the area, it was decided to strike military infrastructure at the site”, the IDF said.

“The IDF continues to monitor developments in the area and will act as necessary in order to defend the citizens of the State of Israel”.

State Department: Witkoff to head to Middle East amid ceasefire deadlock

US President Donald Trump’s Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, plans to return to the region in the coming days, a State Department spokesperson said on Monday, according to Reuters.

“Special Envoy Witkoff plans to return to the region in the coming days to work out either a way to extend Phase I or advance to Phase II,” the spokesperson said.

Hamas on the weekend rejected Witkoff’s proposal for a temporary ceasefire during the Ramadan and Passover periods.

On Saturday night, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Office announced that the Israeli government had agreed to adopt Witkoff’s proposal.

As part of the agreement, half of the hostages – alive and dead – will return to Israel on the first day of the agreement and at the end of the period, if an agreement for a permanent ceasefire is reached, the rest of the hostages, living and dead, will return to Israel.

Witkoff proposed the plan due to an understanding that currently, there is no way to bridge the gaps between Israel and Hamas regarding the end of the war, and additional time is needed for talks on a permanent ceasefire.
