Hurricane Lala charges toward Hawaii, leaving over 40,000 without power

Hurricane Lala approaches Hawaii with strong winds and heavy rain, leaving more than 40,000 utility customers without power across the state as the National Hurricane Center warned of “life-threatening” conditions.

The poweroutage website showed 42,889 customers without power as of 2:14 p.m. HST (0014 GMT today) in Hawaii, including 31,792 on the Big Island and 7,203 in Maui County, which includes the islands of Maui, Lanai and Molokai.

An advisory from the hurricane center at 2 p.m. HST predicted 10 to 20 inches (25.4 to 51 cm) of rain on the Big Island, and possibly up to 25 inches there, as well as 8 to 12 inches in eastern Maui and 4 to 6 inches in western Maui.

“This rainfall will produce life-threatening flooding and mudslides, especially in areas of steep terrain,” the center says.

Hawaiian Electric warned customers to expect “possible extended outages, potentially overnight,” as the storm system made its way westward across Hawaii. On the Hamakua Coast on the Big Island, utility crews are assessing a 42-mile (67.6 km) span of transmission lines after fallen trees knocked down multiple poles and structures, Hawaiian Electric spokesperson Darren Pai told TV station Hawaii News Now.

Kushner meets Hamas chief in Egypt in push for Gaza disarmament; IDF continues strikes

US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law and top aide Jared Kushner met with Hamas chief Khalil al-Hayya in the Egyptian coastal city of El-Alamein on Sunday, even as Israel kept up strikes targeting terror groups in the Strip.

Kushner was joined by Board of Peace senior envoys Nickolay Mladenov and Tony Blair, as well as top diplomats from Mideast mediating countries Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey.

Sunday’s meeting was Kushner’s first with Hayya and other Hamas officials since October 2025, when he sat down with them for the first time to finalize a ceasefire and hostage release deal with Israel.

Trump officials have defended the engagement with the US-designated terror group as necessary for advancing Washington’s Gaza peace plan, while critics have argued that such meetings legitimize Hamas.

Kushner used the meeting to lean on Hamas to begin implementing the Board of Peace’s disarmament plan that it agreed to on July 30, the Arab diplomat from one of the mediating countries said.

Hamas said it will only begin disarming if Netanyahu publicly commits to plan, says diplomat

Hamas officials told senior US adviser Jared Kushner that they will only begin implementing the Board of Peace’s disarmament plan if Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu publicly commits to adhering to its terms as well.

Netanyahu has publicly come out against the proposal, and is unlikely to shift his position ahead of the October 27 Knesset election.

The Board of Peace is hoping that coaxing Netanyahu to quietly restore a halt on IDF strikes in Gaza will be sufficient enough to allow for Hamas to begin handing over its weapons, but the Arab diplomat says the terror group is unlikely to do so without a public announcement from the Israeli premier in which he expresses support for the disarmament plan.

Kushner has landed in Israel following his meetings in Egypt, and is slated to meet Netanyahu tomorrow.

Israeli arrested in Greece for sparking wildfire

Greek authorities say they have arrested a 35-year-old Israeli national on suspicion of starting a wildfire on the island of Crete, as the country battles a seasonal spurt of deadly blazes.

The man, who is not named, is accused of lighting a barbecue in a forested area near the town of Rethimno on Crete’s northern coast, despite a burn ban being in effect across the island, according to the E-Kathimerini news site.

According to Walla, authorities suspect that embers from the barbecue were carried by high winds from the guesthouse where he was staying, sparking the fire.

He is accused of negligent arson.

Firefighters managed to get the blaze under control after four hours, according to the report.
