An Open Letter to Our Kehillah: A Call to Secure the Future of Our Torah Institutions

I had the privilege of speaking with a number of the Rabbanim of the city, shlita, as well as with many individuals who faithfully devote themselves to the needs of the community.
Throughout these conversations, the same cry was heard time and again – profound concern over the extremely difficult situation facing our Torah and educational institutions, and the enormous burden being carried by those responsible for their continued existence.
I therefore felt it my duty to bring these matters before the esteemed Rabbanim, shlita, to whom the eyes of the entire community are turned, with the firm belief that, through Daas Torah and the guidance of the Rabbanim, a proper path can be found for the benefit of the entire community.
Maintaining our Torah and educational institutions is among the heaviest responsibilities facing our community. Those engaged in this sacred work labour day and night to ensure the continued existence of the institutions, the salaries of rebbeim and teachers, and the needs of the talmidim and talmidos.
However, the time has come to state the situation as it truly is.
It is no longer within the ability of a small number of individuals, however dedicated they may be, to continue carrying this enormous burden alone. It is neither fair nor sustainable that a responsibility upon which the future of the entire community depends should rest upon the shoulders of only a few.
The question of sustaining our Torah institutions is not merely the concern of their administrators. It is the responsibility of the entire community.
Nor is this a new concept. Throughout the generations, particularly in the communities of Europe before the Second World War, permanent communal regulations were established for the support of Torah institutions. Every member of the community carried his share according to his means, so that supporting Torah was the responsibility of the entire community rather than a burden carried by a few individuals.
According to the figures provided to us, the combined shortfall facing the city’s Torah and educational institutions ahead of the coming school year now stands at more than £12 million.
This is not merely the call of the administrators of our institutions.
It is the cry of the entire community.
If the present situation continues, there is a very real danger that institutions will no longer be able to carry the burden placed upon them. Chas v’shalom, this could result in institutions being forced to reduce their activities, limit the number of pupils they can accept, and weaken the foundations of chinuch upon which the future of our community depends.
I therefore respectfully ask the esteemed Rabbanim, shlita, to consider whether the time has come to establish a comprehensive communal takannah, in whatever form the Rabbanim deem appropriate, through which the responsibility of supporting our Torah and educational institutions would be shared among all members of the community in a fair and organised manner.
Should this be considered appropriate according to Daas Torah, consideration might be given to establishing a Vaad of Shivah Tovei Ha’ir, which would oversee the arrangements, together with an experienced and reputable firm of accountants to help establish a fair system whereby every individual would participate according to his means.
The system could also operate through the city’s batei knesses, with each kehillah appointing a trusted gabbai or representative to assist in implementing the arrangements.
All of the above, of course, would be entirely subject to the direction, guidance and final determination of the esteemed Rabbanim, shlita.

Israel confirms striking Syrian air base, saying Turkey was planning to deploy forces

Israel confirmed that it carried out airstrikes on a Syrian military airport after intelligence indicated Turkey was preparing to deploy forces at the site, raising concerns of a new security threat along Israel’s northern front.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said Israel and Syria had maintained a security “status quo,” but Damascus was preparing to violate that understanding by allowing Turkish troops to deploy at an air base near Aleppo. Israel said Syria had been repeatedly warned that such a move would threaten Israeli security but failed to respond.

Israel said it would not tolerate developments that could endanger the country and called for the previous security arrangements to be restored.

Turkey strongly rejected Israel’s claims, accusing Jerusalem of using the allegations to justify strikes against Syrian territory.

The development adds another layer of tension to an already volatile region, with Israel, Syria, and Turkey now facing the risk of a broader confrontation.

Trump: ‘No talks or conversations going on or scheduled’ with Iran

US President Donald Trump insists that there are “no talks or conversations going on, or scheduled, with the Islamic Republic of Iran.”

Yesterday, his senior aide and son-in-law Jared Kushner said there have been very “robust” conversations between the US and Iran, while acknowledging that Tehran isn’t yet ready to make a deal that is satisfactory to Washington.

But Trump denies the talks in a post on Truth Social, and writes that the US blockade of Iran’s ports remains in place. He claims that the Strait of Hormuz is “open and operating,” even though ship traffic is down dramatically compared to before the war.

Trump also declares that “all water mines have been removed or detonated,” though he has made a number of contradicting claims regarding whether or not mines were ever planted in the first place in the strait, a key waterway for the global supply of oil.

Strike near Gaza City port targeted meeting of Hamas elite Nukhba force commanders

The military says its strike earlier today near the port of Gaza City targeted commanders and operatives in Hamas’s elite Nukhba force while they were meeting.

One of the terrorists had invaded Israel during the October 7, 2023, onslaught, according to the IDF.

The military says that the targets included a Nukhba force company commander, three platoon commanders, and several more terror operatives, who were all planning attacks against Israeli troops operating in the Strip.

The results of the strike will be released once they are verified, the IDF says.

According to Palestinian media, the strike hit a cafe and killed six, wounding 10 others.

The army says that it took steps to minimize harm to civilians in the strike.

Remains of Yehuda Katz, who went missing in First Lebanon War, are returned to Israel

The remains of Sgt. First Class Yehuda Katz, who went missing in the First Lebanon War’s battle of Sultan Yacoub in 1982, have been returned to Israel, the military announces.

The battle 44 years ago was a skirmish between the IDF and the Syrian army in Lebanon’s Beqaa Valley. It claimed the lives of 21 Israeli servicemen, while more than 30 were injured during it.

Katz, a tank soldier, went missing during the battle along with Sgt. First Class Zachary Baumel and Sgt. First Class Zvi Feldman. Baumel’s remains were recovered with Russian assistance and returned to Israel in 2019. Feldman’s remains were recovered by personnel of the Mossad spy agency in May 2025.

In a statement, the IDF says that in an operation led by the Military Intelligence Directorate, in coordination with the Mossad, Katz’s bones were located and brought to Israel for burial.

The bones were taken for identification and were confirmed to belong to Katz.

Earlier, the military had said new findings thought to be related to Katz had been found overnight.

Parents detained after taking infant son to Jericho, police say

Police say they guided an Israeli family out of Jericho a short while ago and detained the parents for questioning after they entered the Palestinian city with their infant son, allegedly to go shopping.

Jericho is located in the West Bank’s Area A, which is meant to be under full Palestinian Authority control and which Israeli civilians are prohibited from entering.

Upon receiving a report that the family had entered the city, officers identified the location of the parents and instructed them on how to exit, police say.

The parents, a Jerusalem couple in their 30s and 40s, were then questioned under caution at the Jordan Valley police station, in the northern West Bank settlement of Ma’ale Efrayim, according to police.

“Israel Police reiterates that the entrance of Israeli civilians to Area A is forbidden under law and poses a tangible threat to the lives of both those who enter and the security forces,” police say.

The statement adds that entering Area A illegally carries a penalty of up to a year in prison. There have been a string of recent incidents in which Israeli citizens have been escorted out of Area A after entering without authorization.
