EU ministers agree to reduce compensation for flight delays

EU transport ministers have agreed revised rules on air passenger rights when flights are delayed or cancelled which will cut the compensation due for a delay and increase the length of delay before compensation applies.

The proposed changes are likely to draw criticism from claims companies and consumer groups but have also displeased airlines.

The ministers agreed a raft of changes to EU Regulation 261 on air passenger rights at a meeting on June 5, most crucially to increase the period of delay before passengers are entitled to compensation on flights under 3,500 km (short and medium haul) from three hours to four.

They agreed to increase the period of delay before compensation rules apply on flights over 3,500 km from four hours to six or more.

At least four people have been killed in the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv after a series of Russian attacks.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described one of the attacks as a “savage killing”, saying dozens of people had been injured.

It comes after Kyiv embarrassed Moscow when it launched a daring drone raid deep inside Russia last weekend, destroying dozens of bombers.

300 National Guard members in Los Angeles, says Gov. Newsom

The Trump administration has deployed the California National Guard in response to protests in Los Angeles that began Friday evening over immigration enforcement operations, which resulted in some clashes between demonstrators and authorities, the White House said in a statement.

President Donald Trump signed a memorandum “deploying 2,000 National Guardsmen to address the lawlessness” in California as demonstrations opposing Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations continue in the state, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement Saturday evening.

Earlier Saturday, California Gov. Gavin Newsom said the federal government was moving to “take over the California National Guard,” calling the move “purposefully inflammatory” and saying

it will “only escalate tensions.”

Iran Claims to Have Stolen Sensitive Israeli Nuclear Documents

Iranian intelligence agencies claim to have stolen a substantial collection of sensitive Israeli documents, including some related to Israel’s nuclear plans and facilities, Iran’s state media said Saturday.

No independent news outlets confirmed the claims.

There was no immediate official response from Israel, and it remains unclear if this disclosure is connected to a previously reported hacking of an Israeli nuclear research facility last year. Tehran appears to be revealing the information now amid escalating tensions surrounding its own nuclear program.

State-run PressTV quoted unnamed sources stating, “Although the operation to obtain the documents was carried out some time ago, the sheer volume of materials and the need to transport them safely into Iran necessitated a news blackout to ensure they reached the designated protected locations.”

Heads of terror group that abducted and murdered Bibas family killed by IDF

The leader of a small Gaza terror group responsible for the October 7, 2023, abductions and eventual murders of several hostages, including Shiri Bibas and her two young sons, Ariel and Kfir, was killed in an Israeli strike in Gaza City on Saturday, the military said. Another senior member was killed in a separate strike in the city.

Asaad Abu Sharia was head of the Mujahideen Brigades, a relatively small Hamas-allied terror group in the enclave, while Mahmoud Kaheel was one of its leading operatives. The Brigades confirmed the two had been killed.

“The news represents another step for us in closing the circle and the process of accepting the great loss,” the Bibas family said in a statement following the news, adding, “Shiri, Ariel and Kfir will not return, but there is some comfort in knowing that the vile murderers will not harm another family.”

Shiri Bibas, Yarden Bibas, and their two redheaded sons, Ariel, 4, and Kfir, a baby who was just nine months old at the time of the attack, were kidnapped from their Kibbutz Nir Oz home on October 7, 2023, when thousands of Hamas-led terrorists stormed southern Israel to kill some 1,200 people and take 251 hostages, sparking the war in Gaza.

Israeli troops detain Gaza-bound activists, tow boat to Ashdod after bid to bust blockade

IDF troops from the Shayetet 13 naval commando unit early Monday morning took over the “Madleen” flotilla, which was making its way to the shores of the Gaza Strip in an attempt to break the maritime blockade imposed by Israel.

The activists on the ship were detained without incident, and the ship is now on its way to the port of Ashdod.

The Foreign MInistry said in a statement, “The ‘selfie yacht’ of the ‘celebrities’ is safely making its way to the shores of Israel. The passengers are expected to return to their home countries.”

“While Greta [Thunberg] and others attempted to stage a media provocation whose sole purpose was to gain publicity — and which included less than a single truckload of aid — more than 1,200 aid trucks have entered Gaza from Israel within the past two weeks, and in addition, the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation has distributed close to 11 million meals directly to civilians in Gaza,” it added.

“There are ways to deliver aid to the Gaza Strip — they do not involve Instagram selfies. The tiny amount of aid that was on the yacht and not consumed by the ‘celebrities’ will be transferred to Gaza through real humanitarian channels,” said the Foreign Ministry.

IDF says it has retrieved body of kidnapped Thai hostage from Gaza

Israel says it has retrieved the body of a Thai hostage kidnapped into Gaza on 7 October.

The prime minister’s office said that the body of Nattapong Pinta was returned to Israel “in a special military operation”.

Mr Pinta, who had a wife and son, was kidnapped from Kibbutz Nir Oz and killed in captivity near the start of the war, said the government.

Thais were the largest group of foreigners held captive by Hamas militants.

Israel’s defence minister Israel Katz said that Mr Pinta’s body was retrieved from the Rafah area. The 36-year-old went to Israel to work in agriculture.

Mr Katz wrote in a post on X: “I send my deepest condolences to his wife, his young son, and his family, and I thank our heroic fighters who operate under fire time and again to bring back all the hostages, driven by a deep moral commitment.

“We will not rest until all the hostages, the living and the fallen, are returned to Israel.”
