When Children Arrive Before Their Parents

Good Morning,

With all the arguments both for and against having news sheets in shul, and the many efforts to understand the ongoing issue of late attendance, may I just pose a simple question to the wider public:

Why do we work so hard to ensure that our children arrive at school on time, while so many parents themselves arrive late to shul?

My wife works at a large Jewish school and tells me that, even on a bad day, only around 4% of children arrive late. Can we honestly say that only 4% of parents arrive on time to shul?

Just something to think about—and take to heart.

A man has been detained by police after a number of people have been hit by a car driven into crowds.

Merseyside Police confirmed several people have been hit by a car in Liverpool city centre this evening (May 26).

The car has been stopped, the force has said.

The incident follows the Liverpool FC parade heading through the city centre, which attracted thousands to the city.

Images from the scene show a large emergency service presence in the area.

A Merseyside Police spokesperson told the ECHO: “We are currently dealing with reports of a road traffic collision in Liverpool city centre.

“We were contacted at just after 6pm today, Monday May, 26 following reports a car had been in collision with a number of pedestrians on Water Street.

“The car stopped at the scene and a male has been detained.

“Emergency services are currently on the scene.

“We will issue more updates as we have them.”

The ambulance service has said that paramedics are ‘assessing the situation and working with other members of the emergency services’. The ambulance service added that its ‘priority is to ensure people receive the medical help they need as quickly as possible’.

A North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) spokesperson said: “NWAS is supporting an incident in Liverpool city centre, following reports of a road traffic collision.

“We are currently assessing the situation and working with other members of the emergency services. Our priority is to ensure people receive the medical help they need as quickly as possible.

“Updates will be published [by NWAS] and Mersey Police as we know more.

National Security Council issues travel warning for Jews, Israelis in Canada

Israel’s National Security Council raised the travel warning for Canada from Level 1 to Level 2 on Sunday, citing “an increasing threat from terrorist elements against Israelis and Jews in Canada.”

The National Security Council called on the Israeli public in the country to exercise extreme caution, especially in anticipation of anti-Israel demonstrations expected to take place in Toronto and Waterloo.

Leaders of Canada, Britain, and France recently warned of sanctions against Israel if the country didn’t lift restrictions on humanitarian aid and end the military offensive in Gaza.

Hamas executes four Gazans it accuses of looting aid as it tries to assert control

Hamas on Monday executed four men for looting some of the aid trucks that have begun entering Gaza, according to sources familiar with the incident, as a clan leader in southern Gaza issues a challenge to the terror group over guarding the convoys.

One source said the four were involved in an incident last week in which six security officials were allegedly killed by an Israeli airstrike as they were working to prevent gang members from hijacking aid trucks.

“The four criminals, who were executed, were involved in the crimes of looting and causing the death of members of a force tasked with securing aid trucks,” a source told Reuters.

Seven other suspects are being pursued, according to a statement issued by a Hamas-led umbrella group identifying itself as the “Palestinian Resistance.”

Hamas, which took power in Gaza in 2007, has long cracked down hard on signs of dissent among Palestinians in Gaza but it has faced sizable protests in recent months over the war and challenges to its control by armed groups of looters, some of whom it has punished by shooting them in the legs in public.

PM suggests hostage deal imminent, then walks back remark; families denounce ‘abuse’

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu infuriated hostage families on Monday after declaring that he hoped to make an announcement regarding the hostages “today or tomorrow,” only to later assert he was not speaking literally.

“I really hope we can announce something regarding the hostages, if not today, then tomorrow,” Netanyahu said at the tail end of a video statement. He has been issuing near-daily videos in recent weeks updating the public on his efforts as premier while tearing into various accusations against him, particularly those criticizing his handling of the war.

The remarks prompted a flood of anxious inquiries from hostage families surprised to hear that a breakthrough in the long-stalled negotiations with Hamas was on the horizon.

Recognizing that his comment had quickly made waves, the Prime Minister’s Office sent a statement to reporters in the name of a “senior official” that attempted to walk back Netanyahu’s remark.

The “official” claimed the prime minister’s comments should not be seen as a signal of an impending deal.

The prime minister meant that we will not give up on freeing our hostages, and if we don’t achieve that, hopefully in the coming days, we will achieve it later on,” the statement said, adding that, as of now, “Hamas continues to cling to its refusal.”

Israel warns Europe that Palestine recognition may be met with West Bank annexation

Israeli government ministers have reportedly warned key European countries that any unilateral recognition of a Palestinian state could prompt Israel to take unilateral measures as well, potentially including the annexation of parts of the West Bank, according to Monday reports.

Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer personally warned French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot and British Foreign Secretary David Lammy that Israel could respond to recognition of a Palestinian state by annexing Area C of the West Bank and legalizing unauthorized outposts, the Haaretz outlet reported, citing a foreign diplomat familiar with the matter.

A separate report by Israel Hayom said Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar conveyed a similar message to counterparts in the UK, France, and other nations, warning that steps against Israel would be met with Israeli actions such as extending sovereignty to West Bank settlements and parts of the Jordan Valley.

“Unilateral moves against Israel will be met with unilateral moves by Israel,” Sa’ar reportedly said.

The warnings came ahead of a French- and Saudi-led summit set to take place in New York next month, where French President Emmanuel Macron is expected to promote coordinated recognition of Palestinian statehood.
