UK will play its ‘full part’ in peacekeeping efforts in Ukraine, says Sir Keir Starmer |
The UK will play its “full part” in peacekeeping in Ukraine, Sir Keir Starmer has said. The prime minister told Sky News’ political editor Beth Rigby that the conflict with Russia was not just about “sovereignty in Ukraine” but about the impact it also had on the UK, including the cost of living crisis. The purpose of the trip was to discuss the next steps for Ukraine, with the situation now more uncertain following Donald Trump’s election victory in November. |

Surprise fall in retail sales in December, ONS figures show |
There has been a surprise contraction in retail sales in December, despite the month being key for many retailers due to Christmas shopping, official figures show. Retail sales fell 0.3% last month, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS). No drop at all was expected, not least a 0.3% drop. Sales growth of 0.4% had been forecast by economists. Money blog: Many readers back millionaire’s comments about British workers The figures are of significance as they measure household consumption, the largest expenditure across the UK economy. Low household consumption can mean economic growth is harder to achieve. The government has repeatedly said growth is its top priority. |

Russia is about to sign a pact with Iran – should the West be worried? |

In Moscow on Friday, a couple of days before Donald Trump’s inauguration as US president, two of the West’s main adversaries – Russia and Iran – will sign a strategic partnership pact. It will deepen a relationship that has blossomed since Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Should the West be worried? Not according to Russia. “This agreement, like our treaty with North Korea, is not directed against anyone,” foreign minister Sergei Lavrov said earlier this week, referring to a similar pact Moscow signed with Pyongyang last year. That treaty, however, included a mutual defence clause, with both countries pledging to come to the other’s aid if needed. It instantly rang alarm bells in Washington, Kyiv, Seoul and beyond. And now, little more than six months later, Ukraine says it has captured two North Korean soldiers on the battlefield – proof it claims that Russia has deployed thousands of Pyongyang’s troops to the frontline. |

Ben Gvir says party to quit government if cabinet approves hostage-ceasefire deal |
National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir announced on Thursday evening that his far-right Otzma Yehudit party will withdraw from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s ruling coalition if the cabinet approves the hostage-ceasefire deal with Hamas in the Gaza Strip, as it is expected to do over the weekend. At the same time, Ben Gvir told reporters in Jerusalem that even if the far-right party should quit the coalition, it would be willing to return should the war eventually resume. Netanyahu’s Likud party blasted the minister’s threat, saying, “Anyone who dissolves the right-wing government will be remembered as an eternal disgrace.” Netanyahu’s coalition will maintain a Knesset majority even without Ben Gvir’s party, though if fellow far-right minister Bezalel Smotrich’s Religious Zionism also follows through on threats to depart, it would fall to a minority. In addition to Ben Gvir and Smotrich, Diaspora Affairs Minister Amichai Chikli (Likud) vowed on Thursday evening to resign from the government if the ceasefire becomes permanent, and Israel withdraws from the border between Gaza and Egypt before the war goals are achieved. |
