Baruch Dayan Hemess – family tragically loses son in an accident on the way from Antwerp to London |
A devastating tragedy unfolded overnight Wednesday when 13-year-old Daniel Rubin, z’l, of Golders Green tragically lost his life in a car accident just two weeks before his bar mitzvah. Daniel, a cherished talmid of Pardes House, had been returning home with his family from a cousin’s wedding in Antwerp when their vehicle overturned in a horrific accident. Daniel, who was traveling with his twin brother Nesanel and other family members, suffered fatal injuries at the scene. Five other passengers, including Daniel’s younger brother, were evacuated to the hospital. His brother, Eitan Menachem ben Michal Devorah, remains in serious condition, and the community is urged to say Tehillim for his refuah sheleimah, along with all those injured. Initial police investigations suggest that treacherous weather conditions, including snow and ice, may have played a significant role in the accident. Yehi zichro baruch. |

Met Police blocks plans for Pro-Palestine march near BBC as it will take place close to synagogue |
The Metropolitan Police has told the Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC) that the planned route for their latest march risks causing “serious disruption” to a nearby Shul on Shabbas. In a letter sent by the Met ahead of the PSC’s January 18th protest, the anti-Israel group have been warned that if they do not move their “form up” point from Portland Place in central London, officers will “consider the use of Public Order Act conditions as appropriate.” The Met, which has worked closely with communal leaders over several months to hear repeat concerns raised about the frequency and location of pro-Palestine demos say they have considered the views of local community and business representatives, including those of the congregation at a synagogue located a very short distance from the proposed ‘form up’ point in Portland Place. A Met Police spokesperson said: “We have written to the Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC) to set out our position ahead of their protest planned for Saturday, 18 January. This follows extensive engagement over recent weeks. “The role of the police is to ensure that groups can protest lawfully, while also balancing the rights of those in the wider community to go about their lives without serious disruption. “We have carefully considered the likely impact of the PSC’s plans. As part of those considerations, we have reflected on the views of local community and business representatives, including those of the congregation at a synagogue located a very short distance from the proposed ‘form up’ point in Portland Place. |

US House votes to sanction ICC over Israel arrest warrants |
The US House of Representatives voted on Thursday to sanction the International Criminal Court to protest its decision to issue arrest warrants for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former defense minister over Israel’s campaign against the Hamas terror group in Gaza. Lawmakers voted 243 to 140 in favor of the “Illegitimate Court Counteraction Act,” which would urge sanctions on any ICC official or entities backing The Hague who advance “any effort to investigate, arrest, detain or prosecute any protected person of the United States and its allies.” The sanctions include blocking or revoking visas and prohibiting US property transactions. The legislation states that the US and Israel are not signatories to the Rome Statute that created the ICC, which accordingly has no jurisdiction over their conduct. Forty-five Democrats joined 198 Republicans in backing the bill. No Republicans voted against the measure, but Kentucky Representative Thomas Massie abstained, saying afterward that the House “should not get involved in disputes between other countries.” |

Army says trio of suspected Houthi drones downed, ending short-lived lull |
Israel’s air force intercepted three drones apparently launched at the country by Yemen’s Houthis in quick succession on Thursday evening, the military said, marking the first attack in days by the Iran-backed terror group. No injuries or damage were reported in the attacks, with only one of the three UAVs seemingly reaching Israeli territory. The launches came hours after the IDF released data tallying over 350 drones and ballistic missiles fired by the group at Israel since October 7, 2023. The first drone set off sirens in the southern community of Gvulot, some 20 kilometers from the border with Egypt. The Israel Defense Forces said the sirens were activated there “according to protocol.” In a statement, the IDF said the drone was launched at Israel “from the east,” and initial military assessments found the drone had been fired from Yemen. Footage posted to social media from the incident appeared to show Israeli Air Force helicopters shooting down the drone. Residents of the area also reported seeing an interceptor missile launched. |

Ryanair plans to fly full summer schedule from Tel Aviv |
Ryanair opens new tab plans to operate a full schedule of flights from Tel Aviv this summer and is hopeful that Ben Gurion Airport will reopen its shuttered Terminal 1, senior executive Eddie Wilson says in an interview. Ryanair is one of several airlines to have withdrawn from Israel due to war in Gaza and Lebanon. It restarted flights from neighboring Jordan in December. “We rely on (European aviation regulator) EASA guidance … but our view is that we will be back,” says Wilson, chief executive of Ryanair DAC, the largest of five subsidiary airlines operated by the Ryanair Group. “We’ve got a full schedule I think for Tel Aviv…so we will be back in there for the summer as I think most of the other airlines will be,” Wilson says. Asked about the reopening of Ben Gurion’s Terminal 1, which is used by low-cost operators, Wilson says: “We would hope that they would take the sensible decision to open that.” Wilson, who was speaking in Berlin, said Ryanair planned to deploy two additional aircraft to regional airports in Germany this summer, offering 800,000 more seats.
