Ukraine fires UK-supplied Storm Shadow missiles at targets inside Russia

The UK and Ukraine have not yet confirmed the use of the long-range weapons in Russia but their deployment has been widely reported in British media.

Footage has been posted on Telegram reportedly showing wreckage from one of the missiles in Russia’s Kursk region, which borders Ukraine.

The UK had previously said that British tanks, anti-tank missiles and other military equipment could be used inside Russia as part of Ukraine’s defence – but had kept restrictions on the use of long-range missiles.

It comes just days after US President Joe Biden authorised the same policy shift.

Russia’s defence ministry said on Tuesday that Ukraine had fired six US-supplied Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS) in the Bryansk region.

A Russian state news agency cited the ministry as saying the missiles caused no casualties.

Ignoring threats, Western powers officially ask UN nuke watchdog to censure Iran

European powers and the United States have submitted a resolution censuring Iran for its lack of cooperation on its nuclear dossier, despite the head of the UN watchdog on Wednesday welcoming “a concrete step” by Iran to cap its uranium stockpile.

As a board meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) started in Vienna, diplomats told AFP that Paris, Berlin, London and Washington formally tabled a censure motion critical of Iran.

The resolution is expected to come to a vote on Thursday, the diplomats said.

71-year-old civilian killed alongside soldier after entering Lebanon without approval

A 71-year-old Israeli civilian was killed Wednesday along with a soldier during a gun battle with Hezbollah operatives, after entering southern Lebanon without the required approvals while accompanied by a senior IDF officer.

In a separate incident, an IDF reservist was killed when a damaged building collapsed during an early morning operation in southern Lebanon.

According to an initial IDF probe, the chief of staff of the Golani Brigade, Col. Yoav Yarom, allowed Israeli researcher Zeev Erlich, 71, to enter the western sector of southern Lebanon to examine an archaeological site — an ancient fortress.

Despite the belief that the area had been cleared, two Hezbollah operatives were hiding at the site and opened fire at the researcher, senior officer, and other soldiers who were accompanying them.

Erlich and a soldier, who will be named later, were killed in the incident.

Col. Yoav Yarom, the Golani Brigade’s chief of staff who was accompanying Erlich, was moderately wounded in the gun battle with the Hezbollah operatives. A company commander with the Golani Brigade’s 13th Battalion was also seriously wounded in the same incident.

Erlich had entered southern Lebanon while armed and in IDF uniform, despite apparently not being an active duty soldier or in reserves.

The two Hezbollah gunmen were killed, according to an IDF probe. The IDF has retroactively recognized Erlich as a major in reserves, despite him not being on active duty when he was killed. His entry to southern Lebanon is under investigation by the IDF.

Hezbollah’s leader says it has responded to US proposal, ceasefire in Israel’s hands

In his third address as Hezbollah leader, Naim Qassem said on Wednesday that the terror group had reviewed an American proposal for a ceasefire and submitted its response through the mediation of Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri and that the ball is now in Israel’s court.

In a pre-recorded speech, Qassem said the terror group would not disclose its position to the media, but noted that in negotiations, the terror group had adhered to two principles: a complete cessation of hostilities, and the preservation of Lebanese sovereignty.

He rejected the notion that Israel would be able to keep striking Hezbollah even after a truce is reached, saying that Israel should not be allowed to breach Lebanon’s sovereignty.

The speech came a few hours after Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar told 100 foreign ambassadors that Israel wanted a durable agreement with Hezbollah, but needed to maintain the right to act if the agreement was violated.

Qassem also vowed that Hezbollah had the means to continue to engage the IDF in a long war of attrition and that the group was willing to “pay any price because the price will also rise for the enemy,” adding that it would respond to Israeli strikes on Beirut by targeting Tel Aviv.

US vetoes UNSC resolution demanding Gaza ceasefire not conditional on hostage release

The United States on Wednesday vetoed a UN Security Council resolution that called for a permanent ceasefire between Israel and Hamas and the unconditional release of all hostages, but did not make one contingent on the other.

All other members of the 15-seat council voted in favor of the resolution, which was sponsored by the panel’s 10 non-permanent members. It came some thirteen months into the ongoing war in the Gaza Strip, which began when Hamas-led terrorists attacked Israel on October 7, 2023, killing some 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages.

“A durable end to the war must come with the release of the hostages. These two urgent goals are inextricably linked. This resolution abandoned that necessity, and for that reason, the United States could not support it,” said Deputy US Ambassador to the UN Robert Wood.
