Private schools vote for legal action over VAT plans |
A group representing 1,400 private schools will press ahead with plans for a legal challenge against the government’s introduction of VAT from January, the BBC can reveal. In a board meeting on Thursday, the Independent Schools Council (ISC), the body which includes most independent schools in the UK, voted to pave the way for legal action. Lord David Pannick KC, one of the country’s leading barristers in cases relating to government decisions, is to lead the challenge which will be brought on behalf of parents, including those with children with special educational needs and disabilities (Send). A Treasury spokesperson told the BBC they do not comment on potential litigation matters. Chancellor Rachel Reeves confirmed private schools would no longer be exempt from VAT in the autumn Budget, saying the money raised would help “provide the highest quality of support and teaching” in the state sector. The government has estimated it would raise £460m extra to spend on state schools next year, rising to £1.7bn by 2029/30. The ISC is hoping for a judicial review of the government’s policy, which will focus around claims of breaches of the European Convention on Human Rights. The action will be brought around Article 14, the prohibition of discrimination, and Article 2 of the First Protocol, the right to education. |

Spain mourns as death toll passes 150 in catastrophic floods |
At least 158 people have died in Spain’s worst flooding disaster in generations as rescuers battle odds to find survivors. On Thursday more than 1,200 workers, aided by drones, were deployed to the rescue mission as rains continued to threaten parts of the country. “Right now the most important thing is to save as many lives as possible,” Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez told victims in a visit to affected communities. But in some of the towns worst- hit in Tuesday night’s floods, people were left to the task of recovering bodies from the mud and wreckage. In the town of Paiporta, Valencia where a river burst its banks, at least 40 deaths have been recorded so far. “We all know someone who has died,” said pharmacist Miguel Guerrilla, standing outside his chemist shop which has been covered in thick mud. “It’s a nightmare.” On Thursday, the BBC saw undertakers and funeral vans retrieving bodies from the street, while on nearby roads, cars swept away by the storm surge were piled on top of each other. Motorists have recounted the horror of being trapped by the surging tides on Tuesday which turned highways and streets into rivers – many who survived climbed trees or bridges to escape. |

IDF Targets Hezbollah Command Centers and Weapon Storage in Syria |
The IDF has confirmed a series of airstrikes on weapons storage facilities and command centers used by Hezbollah’s Radwan Forces and Munitions Unit in Al-Qusayr, Syria. According to IDF intelligence, these strikes by the Israeli Air Force aim to disrupt Hezbollah’s operations in the area. In recent months, the IDF has ramped up strikes to curb weapon transfers from Iran through Syria into Hezbollah-controlled areas in Lebanon. Typically storing arms in Lebanon, Hezbollah’s Munitions Unit has expanded its logistics base to Al-Qusayr, near the Syrian-Lebanese border, enabling weapon smuggling across the border. This operation is part of a broader IDF campaign against Hezbollah’s Unit 4400, which manages smuggling routes from Iran through Syria into Lebanon. Recent IDF strikes have targeted these border crossings to halt the flow of munitions and reduce threats to Israel. The IDF has accused Hezbollah of placing command centers in populated civilian areas with the support of the Syrian government, compromising the safety of local populations in both Syria and Lebanon. |
