Police are investigating after antisemitic words and symbols were raked into bunkers at a golf club in north London. The messages, which included a swastika, were found at Hendon Golf Club in the early hours of Friday Erev Yom Kippur 11 October. The police said staff at the club, which is in the borough of Barnet, reported the messages and damage to other property. It added that the incident was being investigated as a racially aggravated hate crime. Detective Chief Inspector Daniel Branch, of the North West Command Unit which covers Barnet, said: “We are aware of the shock and distress that this incident has caused, especially coming at a time when the Jewish community is celebrating Yom Kippur. “The incident is being investigated as a racially aggravated hate crime and work is ongoing… to identify and arrest whoever is responsible for this. “Following the incident, we have attended the golf course to support the club and have spoken to community leaders to ensure they are updated on the progress of this investigation. |

Columbus probably Spanish and Jewish, study says |
Famed explorer Christopher Columbus was likely Spanish and Jewish, according to a new genetic study conducted by Spanish scientists that aimed to shed light on a centuries-old mystery. Scientists believe the explorer, whose expedition across the Atlantic in 1492 changed the course of world history, was probably born in western Europe, possibly in the city of Valencia. They think he concealed his Jewish identity, or converted to Catholicism, to escape religious persecution. The study of DNA contradicts the traditional theory, which many historians had questioned, that the explorer was an Italian from Genoa. Columbus led an expedition backed by Spain’s Catholic Monarchs seeking to establish a new route to Asia – but instead he reached the Caribbean. His arrival there was the beginning of a period of European contact with the Americas, which would lead to conquest and settlement – and the deaths of many millions of indigenous people to diseases and war. Countries have argued for years over the explorer’s origin, with many claiming him as one of their own. There have been an estimated 25 conflicting theories of his birthplace, including Poland, Great Britain, Greece, Portugal, Hungary and Scandinavia. These new findings are based on more than two decades of research. |

There was a lot of commotion at the scene, and it was a serious event, but we managed to evacuate the injured quickly to hospital for continued medical care.” MDA paramedic Rafi Sheva reported, “This was a very difficult scene; we declared it a mass casualty event and treated patients suffering from blast injuries and shrapnel. The injuries were severe, and we evacuated the injured to hospitals as quickly as possible for further medical treatment.” Eyewitnesses reported that no siren was sounded before the UAV exploded. The IAF is investigating why an alert was not sounded. This is the highest number of casualties in a single event since Hamas’ October 7, 2023 massacre. |

Netanyahu: UN must withdraw south Lebanon peacekeepers from combat zones |
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday called on the United Nations to immediately pull its peacekeeping force in southern Lebanon from areas where Israel is battling Hezbollah, saying that the terror group is using the international troops as “human shields.” Netanyahu’s comments came as the UN peacekeeping force said two Israel Defense Forces tanks had entered a United Nations Interim Force In Lebanon position Sunday. The IDF said that the incident took place during an attempt to evacuate wounded IDF soldiers under fire. In urging that members of UNIFIL be moved out of harm’s way, Netanyahu said that previous similar pleas by Israel had been refused, despite a rising number of injuries to UNIFIL troops. Mr. Secretary General, get the UNIFIL forces out of harm’s way. It should be done right now, immediately,” Netanyahu said in English. UNIFIL said the Israeli military “deliberately” hit several UNIFIL posts, including the headquarters at Naqoura. At least five UNIFIL soldiers have been lightly injured in a spate of recent incidents that have also included shootings that the UN did not attribute to either Israel or Hezbollah. |
